We had to book the room while we were on the road. We had a 50 $$off card from BW and figured we'd use it here. We were on our way home from a concert and were just too tired to drive anymore so we called the 800 number on the back of the giftcard. They had one room left. We took it. We paid 139 (With the coupon price off) to stay in a crappy bed. The screen door was patched with bandaids. 3 of them. The lamps had no lightbulbs. The lampshades themselves were disgusting. It looked like someone sprayed dust, dirt on them and then just sprayed it off with a hose. It was a smoking room. I figured okay, I'm a smoker, that'll do. Well, the room smelled like urine/smoke and wet dog.
The only good thing was the view from the 4th floor. But there was no balcony. If there was, I probably would've jumped just to get some fresh air.

I've stayed at some other hotels in the area, and this one was no better or worse; it seems a solid choice given the other options. It is on the main downtown street in Houghton, so there are some restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, which is nice. There is also a charming coffee shop down the street. The hotel is right on the river, so some of the rooms would have great views of the river (mine faced the other direction). My room was spacious; it had a big couch, desk, and table. The bed could be more comfortable with nicer bedding, but it was clean and served its purpose. The service at the front desk was fine. I did have dinner in the restaurant upstairs. The restaurant has a lovely view of the river, but otherwise the experience was average. My service was very slow, and my food was purely average (I ordered a steak; most of it was fat and gristle.) I wasn't expecting anything too fancy, so this hotel lived up to my expectations; I don't think it advertised being anything other than what it was. Solid stay.

In Houghton for business recently, I spent two days in the Sunset Suite, Room 526, with a regular hotel room for a sitting room and a corner room with a king size bed and hot tub, and a balcony looking west over the Portage Channel. Simply spectacular, and a heck of a deal at $150 a night. Don't know what some other reviewers are talking about when they say the hotel is dirty (it wasn't) or outdated (it may not have been renovated in 10 years but it's not like it's an awful flophouse) or that the staff is not helpful and friendly (they were both!). Bed was comfy, good TV choices, clean, great location downtown on the river with spectacular views, nice pool area.

One other recommendation -- the seventh floor restaurant is apparently under new management with a new menu featuring local wild game, and it was really good. My party had roast duck, venison, bison and fish the first night I was there, and it was all good.

Room 103...... First floor accomodations that face the river and the back parking area of the hotel for easy unloading and loading up of your vehicle. Here is what we especially liked.
We towed our bikes up in 14' trailer, and not many hotels or motels have areas to park your SUV or Truck and trailer. This facility has an overflow parking area just a few yards from their main enterance for such rigs. We could leave our vehicle attached to the trailer and load and unload the bikes just yards from the hotel doorway without bothering or blocking anyone. Another big plus is that this facility also has a CITGO gas station with regular AND PREMIUM fuel right outside their side enterance. I've attached a photo of the parking area, with the CITGO station and the side of Best Western Franklin Square.....as you can see, it's really handy. The food was very good, and the restaurant has a great view of the river from the 7th floor. The Best Western will give you a special coupon for a $2.99 breakfast from their 7th floor restaurant...... for each night of your stay ( ask if they forget), and the breakfast includes eggs, meat, potato and toast.
Although our room 103 was suppose to be a smoke free room, we could smell a faint odor lingering. The beds were hard and didnt have pillow tops, and hou can tell it's an OLDER facility.... But other than that, we loved the easy access to everything this facility had to offer. And if you like Prime Rib, just 2.5 miles on the main road into Houghton, MI, away is the Pilgrim River Steakhouse. The Prime Rib you could cut with your fork......was simply Outstanding.

My husband's family is from Houghton and recommended this hotel. It was by no means horrible, but terribly it was far from luxury, the way it had been advertised. Our room 516, had probably not been renovated since the hotel was built in the 80's. Everything was scuffed up and seemed old, worn, and tired. The hair dryer didn't work. The bead spreads were long overdue for a replacement. The wallpaper in the bathroom was from the 80's. The whole place hadn't been painted in a while. There were some solidified mystery substances in places on the walls. Needless to say, the exercise equipment in the exercise room was fairly old, and some of it looked like it could have been donated from someone's personal gym. If we visit Houghton again, we will not be staying at the Franklin Square Inn.

Good things: We had a canal side room and the view was gorgeous. The cleaning staff seemed good. We liked the downtown location. The rooms are reasonably priced.

We chose this hotel due to its downtown Houghton location, but that ended up being the ONLY benefit. The hotel staff were not particularly friendly (from check-in to check-out). The hallways are dark with outdated decor (does not appear to have been updated in 20+ years). The light fixtures in the hallway are dusty with cobwebs. Inside our room, we found some disgusting things (see photos accompanying this review). The hairdryer in the room was broken. There is no soundproofing - we could hear the TV from the room next door. We ate breakfast at the restaurant one morning. The service was slow/poor and the server informed some guests that "there was no fruit today because a large party ate it all last night." They obviously cannot plan for parties and are incapable of replenishing food in a timely manner. The selection and quality on the menu is unimpressive. The decor is that of a hunting lodge - with hanging deer heads. Some people we know have stayed here and had nicer rooms so perhaps they keep the suites in better condition than the normal rooms. We got a AAA rate.

I've stayed here 3 times in trips to Michigan Tech, and each time I've found it a good place to stay for working with colleagues on campus - the breakfast is good, it's close to downtown, and just a short drive to campus. They'll also shuttle you from the Houghton-Hancock airport if you call them. It's my favorite place to stay in Houghton.
