“We Did Come back!”
Reviewed July 5, 2010

fter a pleasant stay here in 2009, we decided to come back in 2010, again over the 4th of July weekend. The hotel is "newer" not new as it has been here since 2008 at least. We saw a billboard advertising it as a NEW hotel. It's located in a quiet area convenient to a Walmart with a good restaurant (the Rock House) across the parking lot. We found the bed comfortable, the A/C working very well on the hot weekend and fast wired internet service. The breakfast was pretty much hotel standard, but good. The towels in the room were very disappointing as they were well worn, thin and small. This was true over the three days of our stay. Michigan is now all no smoking in all hotels, so the non smokers won't have to gripe. Yes, we most likely will come back.

At the Country Inn and Suites in Houghton we experianced a friendly and helpful breakfast server. She explained how the pool worked to our boys (we ate breakfast late so no one else was there) and told us about other things to do in the area. That is not the experiance we had with housekeeping. We checked in on Wednesday night our room had 4 towels, 3 washcloths, 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner, 1 soap and 1 lotion. We used those after hiking all day Wednesday. Thurdays when we returned at 5:30 pm our beds were made and our 4 towels were folded but that was it. There was no shampoo, conditioner or soap refills. The washcloths were removed and not replaced. We called down to the front desk and the guy there brought some up. The next day we hung around the hotel in the morning we noticed that the housekeeping staff walked up and down the hall talking most of the am. They followed each other to the trash can to dump 1 small bag of trash. We noticed other things too. There was a lot of break taking and talking from the front desk staff and housekeeping staff than work being done. This hotel was not worth the $129.00 AAA room rate.
Rooms were comfortable other than housekeeping. It is a good thing this hotel is new in a few years this will be very run down. From what I could tell this was a great, friendly staff that needs a better manager.

This is a fairly new hotel, located in busy area, near a Walmart.

Quiet, more business travelers than families. Able to get two queen beds + sofa bed. Good housekeeping. Spacious breakfast area, nice pool.

Only negatives, had other guests smoking in nonsmoking area, which stunk up the hallways. The second morning at breakfast, there was clearly someone different working because the breakfast area was not kept up nearly as nicely as the morning before.

We came to Houghton to attend the MTU alumni reunion and booked this hotel after checking TripAdvisor. This hotel is near WalMart and is newer, quiet and has an above average included breakfast (included pre-made omelets and sausages, make-your-own waffles, yogurt, toast, cereal, drinks, etc.). We did not use the pool, but the kids staying there were in it all the time. Ask for a room away from the ice maker for an even quieter stay. Convenient to the newer shops in Houghton, but a bit far to walk into the old town or MTU campus.

We chose the Country Inn over the Holiday Inn as the rate was better over the 4th of July. We certainly were not disappointed! The room was large with a very comfortable king bed, large TV, bathroom completely separate from the bedroom, a desk and fast wireless internet. They had a pool but, due to the holiday weekend, we didn't try it. The breakfast room is on the small side and is quite crowded when the hotel is full. There are overflow seating areas, however. The attendant was always in the breakfast room and was very busy. Everything was kept filled and was good. There is a nice business center, too. The location is very quiet but convenient to restaurants and shopping. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here just two nights when visiting Michigan Tech this winter. Being a newer hotel, this was our first choice in places to stay. They were solidly booked while we were there, a career fair at Tech brought in guests, and a college hockey team was also there while we were there. There was never a feeling like it was too crowded, or too much for the staff to handle. The man at the front desk was very firendly when we checked in and helped us with restuarant recommendations. Our room was spacious and clean - the only problems we encountered were small. We had a suite and the room with the outside window was a little chillier than the inside room. It was close to zero degrees while we were there, so colder air near the window is expected. We could close the curtians which helped keep the cold out. Another problem was the lack of good water pressure in our sink. The shower was great, but the sink was a little slow. We mentioned it when we checked out, but never said anything during our stay - it wasn't that big of a deal. The continental breakfast was very nice. They had a good variety - bisquits, sausages, cereals (including hot oatmeal), all kinds of breads, fruit, yougarts, and juices. They also had the make it yourself waffles. The breakfast room was spacious and had plenty of tables. Never once did we see it where there wasn't an open table - and things were kept clean and refilled on a constant basis. Also, there was a nice room just off the lobby that had two computers available to guests. Only once did I go down to use one and there was somebody else there. In that room was also a huge map of the area on the wall and brochures of places to go and things to do. Overall a great place to stay. We will definitley come here again when we return to Houghton.

This is the newest hotel in the area. I have stayed here on business on multiple occasions and have always found it to be clean, quiet, and comfortable. It is located within walking distance of an Applebee's, Wal-mart, and an entertainment complex featuring bowling, an arcade, a restaurant, and other activities. So far as I know, it is the only hotel in the area that offers a hard-line DSL connection (vs wireless). Houghton is not a large city by any means and it is less than 5 minutes from the hotel to Michigan Technological University. I have always stayed using the Fed Gov rate, so I am unsure as to the rack and discount rates, but I have always been especially pleased with this property when compared with other places I have stayed in the Houghton/Hancock area.

  • Liked — Hard-line DSL connection. Has kid friendly pool if traveling with family
  • Disliked — Farthest hotel from downtown and Michigan Tech
