“A quiet respite”
Reviewed September 5, 2008

We stayed at this hotel for two nights while exploring the Keweenaw Penisula. The stay was very pleasant. The staff were helpful on most occasions. We would stay here again if needing a hotel in Houghton.

We've stayed at several of these properties on road-trips throughout the Midwest and highly recommend them. Clean and well-maintained (never a run-down feel), good breakfast, friendly, polite & helpful staff, nice pools & hot-tubs, free wireless internet. The Country Inn in Houghton did not disappoint! Well-located on main highway into town but without road noise. There was noise, however, from the dirt-bike track behind the motel, so we'd recommend a front-facing room!
We recommend a nice stroll on the pretty trail alongside Portage Lake in downtown Houghton followed by a steak and beer at The Library Brew-pub. Yummy!

Our check-in was very fast. At first we were told they didn't have a room reserved for dog owners. Then the front desk said they did. Our room was great and the bed was very comfortable. The room was very clean and didn't smell like smoke even though it was a smoking room.

Even with reservations, checking-in was a very slow process. Several people ahead of me could not check-in (posted check-in is 3PM) because their rooms had not been cleaned yet and were asked to come back in an hour or so - it was after 3:30PM. Although my room was ready, the bathroom wasn't very clean. The shower curtain was moldy across the bottom and there was hair in the bath tub. The house keeping staff consistently didn't clean the bathroom very well. Rooms were cleaned very late in the day, usually around 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM and house keeping seemed disgruntled when I asked for the bed to be made. The front desk wasn't helpful when I asked if my room could be cleaned earlier in the day while I was out and it was cleaned even later the following day. I didn't notice any house keeping staff in the mornings. The front desk didn't answer the phone very much. Overall service was less that desirable.

The hotel itself is very nice. It is only about a year old. Room was clean and bathroom nice sized. Shower worked well. One complaint I do have is that the gym does not have any air conditioning so it was hot in there. Also, some of the staff was not friendly, especially the person that worked the breakfast room.

We've been fans of the Country Inns & Suites chain for awhile and jump at the opportunity to stay at them when they're along our route while travelling, although we'd stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn Express on previous trips to the Houghton area.

The hotel itself was very nice, like all other newly-built Country Inn & Suites properties. The room was clean, well-appointed and spacious. One thing I noticed was that the hotel was built in a somewhat barren area being redeveloped, so there were few trees in the area, although more may have been planted since our Memorial Day Weekend 2006 trip. The hotel is also situated next to the Walmart supercenter and along the M-26 shopping and restaurant strip, so it's pretty convenient to everything in town.

The only downside was that we had reserved a room with a small refridgerator, but when we got to our room, the place where the fridge sits was empty. I asked the desk manager and they said someone with a baby (and the need to refridgerate milk or formula) had reserved a room without one, so they borrowed ours. Of course, I wasn't about to demand they return the fridge (we didn't have a baby with us), but it was still frustrating that they didn't say anything to us or offer to take a couple bucks off the bill for the inconvenience. After returning from our sightseeing the next day, however, another fridge had been hooked up while we were out, so I didn't make a stink about it the next day when we checked out.

Otherwise, the free continental breakfast was good and overall our stay was pleasant. While we always stayed at the Holiday Inn Express down the street on past stays, I would still check the Country Inn for availability first on our future trips to the Copper Country.
