My wife and I opted for a hearty Sunday breakfast before heading back home. Fortunately, we got there a tad before the church crowd arrived (around 930), so we beat the rush.

The Hillside is a homey, comfortable, no frills kind of place that makes you feel like the owners converted a spare room or the garage into a restaurant. In fact, when we first pulled in, we weren't sure if we were parking at someone's house or at a restaurant. Finally, we saw the small open sign on the door. Inside, the tables are nicely spaced, and the ambiance is country-meets-UP.

I opted for the "Meat Your Match" a hearty mélange of various forms of protein (sausage, bacon, ham, even corned beef) grilled up with hash browns topped with two eggs and sausage gravy. Oh, and a side of toast. My wife had a similar selections (hers was ham only) with a side of pancakes. Both were served in a large skilled-shaped ramekin. The hash browns were excellent, very crispy, but not burnt.

If there's a downside, it's that The Hillside could really use some decent coffee, as their brew is rather weak and nondescript. But then again, that's really not what The Hillside is about. Rather, it's about providing tasty home-cooked food at a very reasonable price.

One final comment: if you're using a GPS to locate The Hillside, our Garmin put it on wrong side of M26. As you head out of town, the restaurant will be on your *right* side (look for their sign) not on the left. Nonetheless, The Hillside is well worth the short drive from downtown Houghton.

You want a meal that taste like you spent a couple hours in the kitchen cooking......then this is the place! Everything on the menu is excellent! Service is great, people are friendly and they have these HUGE sticky buns that you must get to take home,,,,,yummy!

Stopped here on a busy weekend due to it being a Michigan Tech family weekend. Was able to get seated fairly quickly despite the small restaurant space. Food was delicious and served in a timely manner. We will totally eat breakfast here again.

This is a plain little cafe- not gourmet- where jeans and sweatshirts are just fine. We had breakfast and the pancakes were light, hash browns covered half the plate, and the sausage was average. The "omelette" was not enveloping the filling but rather inside out. If you threw the vegetables in first then poured the eggs over that and folded this with the vegetables on the outside is what they call an omelet. Tasty enough but it's not an omelette. The coffee was your usual watery brew found at these little places so bring your Starbuck's freeze-dried mini--or your herbal tea. The wait staff was efficient and friendly. The owner, who is also the cook, needs a course in etiquette. When he's not cooking omelettes inside out he is sprawled at the table outside of the kitchen on the phone and/or snorting. When I found out he was the cook I wondered who was watching our food? Well, since he got the cheese wrong I didn't wonder any more. People would come in and he wouldn't get up to seat them or hand out menus but rather "whisper-whistle" to them and holler, "Seat yourself!" We would return as the food was okay and what was found in roadhouses all over America until Dijon mustard became the "right" mustard.
