“Tubing Down the Platte River”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Great experience for our family during a family vacation up north. Beautiful scenery as you travel in a tube down the Platte River to Lake Michigan. Equipment was in great shape. Already planning on going on during this year's vacation. One thing to remember, bring a waterproof bag to keep things dry. We didn't bring a camera on the first trip and really wish we had, plus it would've been helpful to have a snack for the kids once we reached the end. Also, remember that there are bathrooms at the beginning of the trip and the end of the trip....not for the majority of the time :) The views of Sleeping Bear Dunes from this angle were fabulous. Everyone is looking forward to going again this year!

“First family kayak trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

Our families first kayak trip ever was a great experience. Took advice of a friend and rented thru the Trading Post instead of the more heard of livery down the Platte. The workers at the Trading Post were friendly and more than helpful. Equipment was in good shape. All of us, me, my wife, 11 year old son, and 8 year old daughter, were all first time kayakers. The Trading Post made this an experience to remember.

“Great Kayak/canoe trips”

Helpful and friendly service. Much better experience than friends who rented down the road at the more crowded Riverside. Plus yummy pizza and ice cream for before and after.

“Beautiful Float Trip, but there is work involved....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2012

We picked Honor Trading Post because of all the Trip Advisor reviews. Easy, easy.... We drove up, completed the paperwork, changed into our swimsuits in their bathroom and then followed the van down to the parking lot at the end of the river where it exits into Lake Michigan.
Additionally, the staff were pleasant and helpful. From the time we arrived until leaving in their van took about 15 minutes.
A couple of hints... do all of your preparations at the Trading Post (like putting on your sun cream, getting what you need for the float in your plastic baggie). Once the van picks you up from the parking lot, there will be others in the van too and no one wants to hang around while someone fiddles in the trunk of their car for half an hour.
My son, 11 and I chose tubes for wet bottoms. My daughter, 17, wanted to keep a dry derriere and chose a tube with a base. Another tip.. if you do the latter, your tube will be much higher out of the water, so when you paddle, only your hands and wrists are in the water compared to all of your forearms if you choose the tubes without a base. Additionally, there is a good 10 minute walk from the drop-off spot where the van leaves you to the entry in the river. It is much harder to carry a tube with a base in it, as you cannot position your arm through it to carry it.

We took the regular 2 hour float (there is a one hour float and I would recommend this to people with smaller children although they don't advertise it). It was quite hot and the water was quite low, with slow flow. There is a LOT of paddling and, although we started the float about 11am, the river was already as crowded with other floaters, kayakers, canoe-ers, and even some swimmers/walkers as our local interstate appears at Rush Hour.

There were beautiful moments of solitude and communing with nature, but much of the "float" was quite vigorous exercise with deft manoeuvering amongst other "craft". Overall it was a very lovely experience and I am happy we chose Honor Trading Post. At the end of the float, they help you drag your tube out of the water and you are done. There are public restrooms if you need to change.

“Great Float Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2012

Arranged for two teens to take the float trip on the lower Platte River out to Lake Michigan. You follow the post van to the parking lot at the end, then the van transports rafters back to the point where they put in on the river. (I dropped the kids off, so parked at the beach 2 hours later to wait on them). The kids enjoyed the trip, even though the river was low due to little rain. It was also very crowded, being the 4th of July weekend, but the tubes still floated just fine, only went a little slower. The kids said the water was clear and clean, and they could see all kinds of fish. They loved the trip. The Trading Post personnel were friendly and helpful, even during a busy day. One note re: the parking. Depending on which lot you park your car, you may need to purchase a Park Pass for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The pass is good for 48 hours and can be used at any park along the lake shore. It was $10 bucks and well worth it--happy to help support keeping this beautiful area available for future generations.
