Owner description: Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island is open seasonally, April 16 - October 2, 2016. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.

“Beautiful gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

We arrived kinda late in the day, but it's not a huge place so had enough time to explore. We did the windmill tour which was ok, but kinda boring. I just wanted to go out on the ledge to see the view. We took some really nice pics of the flowers and foliage. Im sure it's beautiful for the Tulip festival! It looked like they needed to water some of the flowers though. It was not crowded and a little dead, but it was worth the $7 a person. Not really a whole lot to do there, but it was cute. We saw that you can hold your wedding there which kind of intrigued my boyfriend and I bc I know it would be so pretty for pictures. Lots of good photo ops!

“"3.5 Stars" - Yes, go there, "good" attraction”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

Yup, you gotta see a 252-year-old windmill when you are in a city named Holland. Nope, the price is a little overpriced at $7.50 per adult ($5 would be more reasonable). Yup, you get a guided tour through the windmill which is very interesting. Nope, the windmill is out-of-order right now, bummer. Yup, the windmill dancers are somewhat interesting. Nope, nothing else on the property is that great: an old carousel, which only children can ride, not adults; a gift shop full of nothing; nice flowers but visiting Holland outside of tulip season is like attending the ball after Cinderella has left. There's a video you can watch that gives you more background on the windmill, but in some parts the music is so loud you can't hear what is being said. Please consider adding subtitles to the video to compensate for this.
Also, you can get a combo admission ticket with Nelis' Dutch Village. We did this and were glad of it.

“Worth the money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

We enjoyed the visit here. The garden is nice (wrong time of year for tulips though), the windmill tour is very interesting, and the organ was a hoot! The shoe dance was a little rough and too long, but overall we were glad to have visited this attraction.

“Windmill Is Interesting; The Rest, Not So Great.....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

If you're a tourist in Holland, Michigan, chances are a trip to the windmill is a must. At least, that was the case for me. My husband and I paid the $7.50 admission and were told we had 10 minutes to make it to the windmill to see the wooden shoe dance demonstration. We made it in time to watch 3 pair of high school/college-aged girls going through their routine. While a couple of them smiled and tried to be animated for our crowd of about 20 spectators, it was a rather lifeless routine. My husband said he felt embarrassed for them. We then proceeded to go into the windmill for a short tour, which was rather informative. You can actually go up into the actual structure. From there, we walked around and looked at the dated exhibits, ending at the gift shop. I would imagine that this is very lovely at tulip time and a must-see. The grounds were well maintained and planted at the time we were there, and we did enjoy looking at the signage pointing out some of the more unusual trees and plants. If you want to see the windmill up close, however, you will have to pay because it is not visible until you drive into the park.

“Educational and fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

I enjoyed this location as much as the kids. It was unfortunate that the windmill is out of order and they hope to fix it this fall. People were friendly and overall a great experience. Flowers on property beautiful as well.
