Windmill Island Gardens
Ranked #2 of 54 things to do in Holland

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island is open seasonally, April 15 - October 1, 2017. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.

“Dutch in America”
Reviewed September 29, 2011

There is a lot of Dutch to see, experience, and learn about in a visit to Windmill Island in Holland, Michigan. An authentic Dutch windmill disassembled, freighted over, and reassembled by craftsmen from the Netherlands dominates this collection of buildings in a recreation of a village in the Netherlands. Dioramas, authentic food, and displays keep the attention of adults and children alike. The highlight of the visit however will be a tour of the windmill and explanation of how it works. Buy some freshly stone ground flour to take home. In the late spring enjoy a flood of tulips in the numerous beds changed over to annuals when summer comes. One reasonably priced entrance fee lets you enjoy it all.

“Quiet”
Reviewed September 19, 2011

September is really slow in Holland. This is a pretty kitchy spot and more so without tulips. The pictures I got were really nice because there are no strangers cluttering them up. The young tour guide at the windmill was very earnest but the Klompen dancers (all female) seemed as bored with their routine as I was.

“Not worth it...”
Reviewed September 11, 2011

They charge too much to tour a windmill. The windmill is great no doubt but not worth it. Need to reduce it or make it per vehicle.

“disappointing and not worth the money”
Reviewed September 6, 2011

I was very excited to visit Windmill Island based on a friend's recommendation, but I was disappointed. I had the impression that this was a recreated Dutch village with a working windmill. My husband and I payed $7.50 each to enter a very sparse attraction--and we were there on a holiday weekend, when you'd expect to see lots of visitors and activity. The shop was very expensive, there wasn't much to see, and the food offerings didn't look so great. The windmill was large and impressive, but I didn't relish the idea of sitting captive in the windmill to watch a movie before being allowed to see the space. I felt like I payed to enter a shopping space where I was expected to pay more for expensive souvenirs. Perhaps Windmill Island would be more enjoyable during the Tulip Festival, but for our weekend getaway, it wasn't. We spent maybe 30 minutes there before cutting our losses and leaving.
