Review of The Felt Estate

The Felt Estate
Reviewed September 4, 2012

This place is for weddings. It's not set up for a tour. I've seen a lot of "estates" and this one is just okay. Also, there is no clear directions on how to enter the house. A bunch of us were left fiddling with doors until we finally figured it out.

the mansion is being renovated a little at a time... the progress so far is well done... the estate itself is poised on top of a hill not quite in sight of Lake Michigan...

the wedding was quite pleasant there...

If you love touring old homes and estates, this is a must see while enjoying the Saugatuck area. The restoration work is beautiful and there is ample information about the history of the home and it's occupents throughout the years.

For those hot & humid Lake Michigan days, this building has air-conditioning throughout! A nice alternative after days baking on the beach. I adore the craftmanship (very modern use of materials), dramatic family story and parking nearby. The only drawback is the tour is self-guided, no docent to pepper with renovation and/or family question. That being said, self-guided is also known as "go at your own pace"....so for a history lover that just may be a bonus.

Be sure to check their schedule, Felt Mansion is closed odd days to accomodate private functions and seasonal visitors.

This is an awesome place to visit. The renovations are amazing and visiting at Christmas which is what we did was such a delight!

We spent a few very pleasant hours here touring the house and the grounds. As others have written, built in mid-1920's by Dorr Felt, the inventor of the comptometer, for his wife Agnes in the hopes it would help her poor health. Even included a sun room off Agnes' bedroom. Unfortunately, Agnes died 6 weeks after moving in. Now restored after decades of being a seminary, state office building, or empty, it can be rented for weddings and other gatherings. Whole 3rd floor is a ballroom. Still has the speaking tubes used by the Felts to call the help and the original gorgeous tile bathrooms (some of which you can use!). Nice glass-case exhibits of comptometers for those who don't know what they are (basically, the original 4-function calculators).

They recently moved an old meeting house/church on to the grounds, which will be restored next.
