Review of The Felt Estate

The Felt Estate
Reviewed February 26, 2012

The Felt Mansion has been there for many, many years. Tours are offered daily in the summer and on the weekends in the spring and fall. The story behind The Mansion is one for the history books!

A beautiful old mansion/estate being restored. Off the beaten path; we went there while looking for the state park.

My husband and I visited The Felt Estate this weekend as we attended my company's early Holiday Party with a Roaring 20's theme. All in attendance were dressed in clothing styles from that era - we had gangsters, flappers, baseball players, pilots, newsboys and more. There was a band playing upbead, jazzy numbers and photographers taking posed pictures in front of one of three Ford Model T's. A Speakeasy was located on the third floor on the mansion with gangsters guarding the door - entrance was only given if you knew the secret password. :) It was pretty neat to see everyone dressed in styles from the 1920's, which is when the mansion was built.

We were able to tour the mansion and grounds at our leisure and were impressed by the worksmanship and details throughout the entire property. From reading some of the history of the property on their website, you'd never know that it had fallen into quite a few years of disrepair. Those responsible for bringing it back to it's former glory should be very proud!

Great mansion to visit for self-guided tour. You can explore the mansion at your own pace. Nicely restored. I would recommend it to everyone interested in history and architecture.

The Felt Mansion was the summer home of millionaire Dorr Felt and his wife, Agnes Felt. Dorr purchased 750 acres of prime Lake Michigan coastal land in 1919. Construction began on the 17,000 square foot Felt Mansion in 1925 and the family moved into the mansion in 1928. Over the years, the family moved out, and the building and grounds were used for other purposes. During this time, the estate fell into disrepair. In 2002 a local effort was initiated to return the state to its former glory. Today, the estate is a look into the life of a very wealthy 1920’s family. Visiting the Felt Mansion, adjoining grounds, and Lake Michigan is a must see experience if you are in the Saugatuck/Holland area.
