We were really looking forward to having Habenaro's open and waited until January to eat there, hoping that any new restaurant rough edges would have been ironed out. Well, it was disappointing in almost every respect. Not horrible, but not good enough to return.
The decor is cold, in spite of it's warm tone colors, a kind of Mexican-lite interior decorator's version of upscale Mexican. But I wouldn't care what it looked like if the food was good.
Our suspicions about the quality of the food were first roused when we were handed a huge menu rivaling a Denny's, suggesting lots of frozen Sisco entrées. And we were not brought chips and salsa. What respectable Mexican restaurant would require you to pay five dollars for chips and salsa? I have been told that since we've eaten there they've corrected this problem and now bring these. I ordered fish tacos, which were okay but had far too many too-large slices of cabbage to work through to get to the fish. One of my sides was grilled corn, which came dried out and cool. My second side dish was mashed potatoes, which had a wonderful taste, but which were also cool. My dining companion had shrimp tacos, which were also okay, with very large portions of beans and rice that were also only okay. Portions were quite large; I would have preferred better food and less of it. We didn't have desert. I sincerely doubt that there is anyone cooking in the kitchen who really knows how to cook Mexican food.
The margarita my dining companion ordered was really bad. The first one didn't even seem to have any alcohol in it, but even the second one had this sort of insipid flavor that was really the product of a margarita mix. We were surprised, as Habenaro's is billing itself as having fabulous drinks.
We had no complaints about the service. The waitperson was a bit gushy, almost as though compensating for the ordinariness of everything else.
For what we got, this was pretty expensive and we aren't planning to go back. And mind you, we love Mexican food and would eat there often if it was worthwhile. Too bad.
