It's nicest in good weather when you can sit on the outdoor covered porch. Nice fresh trout or whitefish always on the menu. They have reasonably priced fresh fish to go as well as smoked fish and pickled fish. Ask where it is as it is a nice place to have lunch or and early dinner.

The restaurant name is sort of wrong here - "Peterson's Fish Market" is an actual fish market where you can buy fish to take home. There's an associated restaurant which is "4 Suns Cafe," which is what I'm (and I assume everyone else is) actually reviewing. The distinction is a bit important because the two have different hours.

The cafe menu is pretty limited, with four or five different fish-based dishes (plus fries, coleslaw, and drinks), but that's kind of the point here: they do fresh fish, they do it well, and that's all they do. The whitefish was absolutely fresh: tender and flaky with a sweet light flavor. The fish taco was just a piece of fried whitefish in a tortilla with an interesting version of pico de gallo (containing cucumbers) - "just" being a compliment, as the simple mixture was pretty tasty. We also has a smoked salmon bagel, with a nice dry smoky flavor.

The cafe is just a takeout window with a dozen or so wire mesh tables scattered around an outdoor deck, kind of a proto-fast-food place: you order and five minutes later your food is ready. Get it to go if you like, but sitting outside and eating fresh fish straight from the fryer is part of the experience.

This is always a must stop when we are on the Keweenaw. The food is amazing and tastes like it just came out of the lake. I had the fried fish platter with sweet potato Au Gratin and my wife had the baked fish sandwich. We shared a bowl of their chowder which is one of the best chowders I have ever had. Their food is never frozen and always tastes like they make it fresh everyday. The roadside stand has recently expanded with an indoor section for inclement or hot weather and they have added a few new items onto the menu. They do whitefish better than anyone on the Keweenaw. The price is a bit more than you would expect for fast food, but it is worth every penny. Lunch for two was $ 22.
This year, we also stopped in the fish market and picked up some fresh lake trout and smoked whitefish. Both were amazing.

Eating fish that were swimming only this morning or yesterday in the pristine waters of Lake Superior is a great experience. I have purchased fresh whitefish filets plenty of times at their little store. Their smoked fish and fish spread are equally delicious. Their restaurant (which is seasonal) is reliably delicious. It can be a bit windy/chilly as it is located on an elevated site, but the view is great. (Indoor eating is available but not nearly as good an experience). Try it out...

From the road, the restaurant and market doesn't look like anything special. I am so pleased that the urge to stop and check things out got the best of me. In the market, I purchased smoked whitefish to eat during my travel through Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Adjoining the market is a small outdoor restaurant featuring all things fish. I had the fried whitefish basket that came with a large portion of fries and coleslaw. Excellent - wonderful flavor. The fries and fish were cooked well without any hint of oily texture. The smoked whitefish that I consumed during my travels was excellent, too. Next time I'm in the Houghton - Hancock Michigan area, I plan to visit Peterson's Fish Market again!
