Description: In what was formerly called the 'Workman's Cooperative', today's Polonia Restaurant is hardly a well-kept secret (filled most nights with eager pierogi patrons and kielbasa fanatics) and the price points, under $10, makes it a huge Hamtramck draw. The original premise of the restaurant, formed in 1927, was to offer familiar Polish dishes to immigrants making the transition to a new country. Now, it serves equally well as a place for non-Poles to discover the best of traditional recipes, all from a spotless kitchen. As a cooperative, it no longer exists, but the spirit of good pricing, good neighbor jawboning and down-to-earth service still imbues the place, and countless leaders in the local business community can be seen in the comfortable booths and tables, enjoying meals beneath the detailed murals depicting Polish country life. Stuffed cabbage, kielbasa with sauerkraut, and pierogis are all homemade (including the sausage), and to be had at the reasonable prices that are part of the Hamtramck vibe. If you are brave enough, try the czarnina (duck soup), which is loaded with dried fruit and makes for a truly authentic flavor experience.

“Affordable homestyle Polish food in a tidy casual neighborhood spot.”

Just had dinner at Polonia - 2 combination dinners with two drinks for less than $20. More importantly, the food was superb. Fresh homemade sausage, pierogi, stuffed cabbae, potato pancakes. Our dinners came with soup and we both chose dill pickle - it was creamy, mild, with bright notes of fresh dill. The waitress was attentive, friendly, and - yes- as others have noted - a hot blond. The atmosphere is homey and casual. Overall, it was everything we hoped for after a couple of lackluster meals elsewhere.

“Worth the trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2012

I had a buddies company take me out here since we had heard good things. Food was amazing. Hearty and rich. Great beers. Smoking hot looking waitresses. Super cheap at the end. For four of us with drinks I think the total bill was like 40 bucks. If you are looking for something different to eat, you should stop in. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu from what I saw. Get some polish beer too. I know my buddies and I want to go back if we are ever back in town again.

“Best Polish Food in Hamtramck”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2012

Everyone has their favorite ethnic restaurants, and for us, it is Polonia's in Hamtramck on Yemans. The pork chops are awesome as well as the dill pickle soup. We've never been disappointed and have tried most of the items on the menu.

“Good Polish Soul Food in Hamtramck”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2012

I stopped here tonight with my German mom on the way to see a play at the Fox Theater. We've had dinner twice at their adjacent competitor and thought that we would give this place a try. Competition is a good thing -- we were not disappointed. The waitperson was willing to provide recommendations for both their beer selection as well as their dinner menu which is always a plus.

Their mushroom barley soup is Great! The sliced cucumber salad in sour cream with dill is much lighter and tastier than it sounds. The bread basket held bread that hit the spot. It was a wheat-rye combination but butter would have been preferred over the butter tasting spread that was served.

The meal itself was great. The portions were enough to eat for one meal (we are spoiled here in the US.) My goulash with potato noodles was as good – or better – than home cooked meals. My meat was slightly overcooked / dry. The gravy was homemade and great if you are a gravy lover. Its flavor and consistency was perfect. The sides were great for the most part. What I found curious is why the restaurant would serve freshly cooked veggies served with canned / reheated green beans.

The best part of visiting restaurants with friends or family is the fact that you can sample their food. Mom’s sausage was really good! Her potato pancakes were tasty and her perogies were yummy. Both of us left contented and happy with a bill that cost us $30.00 including a 20% tip.

Life is good. So is Polonia Polish Restaurant.
