“Off the beaten path, but well worth it!”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

We made reservations for our family of 5, and there was something everyone enjoyed. The menu was very unique and our dinners were delicious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere was very cozy, as if we were eating in someone's home. The view was fantastic as we were right along the Au Sable River. Be sure to bring a bottle of wine, as they'll cork it for you for a small fee. We will definitely come back!!!

“Holy smokes. Where are we again?”
Reviewed August 1, 2014

Well, knock me over with a feather. This unassuming little restaurant, located inconspicuously next to Stefan's Bridge just east of Grayling, puts out some of the best food we had while vacationing in Michigan. Suggested by locals (how else would you find it?), the atmosphere was delightfully informal and woodsy and our dinners delicious. And we're not just talking burgers and fish and chips here. Sausage-stuffed majool dates for an appetizer, anyone? How about some trout chowder? My wife had the fabulous "Trout Hemingway" (yep, "Papa" hung out here, busy hunting and fishing), seared rainbow wrapped in bacon, and I had a perfectly done Parmesan cheese crusted walleye. (They are famous for their locally-made lemon meringue pies, but, alas, they were out the night we ate there.) A little hard to find, but well worth the effort. (Note: The restaurant does not have a liquor license, but for a small corkage fee, they welcome diners to bring their own wine.)

“A special place to stay or dine”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

Limited seating, and menu, but worth the visit for gourmet fish/food. Fly fishing lodging right on the AuSable with their own ORVIS SHOP!!!! Best trout dinner I have had anywhere.

“Great food and even better view”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

My wife and I stayed at Gates' for our anniversary. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and spent a night in the motel.

The entire experience was memorable. Really enjoyed dining near the river. Being an avid fly-fisherman I enjoyed the the sounds and smells of the river from the opening window near our table. The names of some of the dishes were also quite entertaining, the Hex burger and omlette for example.

“Rude waitresses/Good Food”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

My family and I walked in we were asked by the waitress if we had reservations- we did not. Apparently because of the small size they are required. She then began to chastise us in front of the (only) two tables eating. Stating that she would need to check if they could accommodate us, then came back and said we were "Lucky".
The resturant is off the beaten path in Northern Michigan, so we were all quite supprised at how good the food was. The trout was excellent, prepaired perfectly. Everyone throughly enjoyed their meal.
Its too bad that a restaurant/chef would work so hard, yet employ wait staff that were so unprofessional.
