“Mexican mediocrity”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2012

We continue to look for good Mexican food in GR. This definitely isn't it. Everyone's plate disappointed. Not fresh. Taste was flat. I really think you'll do better at Taco Bell and pay less. They need better fresher ingredients and better recipes.

“Don't get it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2011

This place was recommended to me so many times as being awesome and authentic. I really didn't like it. I got the Barbacoa and it was sort of flavorless and gloppy. The chips were stale. Maybe it was a bad day but I probably won't go back to find out.

“Craving Mexican, we rolled the dice and...jackpot!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2011

After a day at the zoo with the kids we were hungry, and I had a craving for Mexican food. We knew El Granjero was well-reviewed and it was on our way home so we stopped. Jackpot! The place looks modest from the outside, but inside it was clean and bright.

They started us with chips and 2 kinds of salsa (green & red). The chips were just bag chips which was the only low note of the meal. Both salsas were excellent, fresh and HOT. If wimpy salsa bugs you then El Granjero is the place for you.

My wife ordered a quesadilla which she liked but didn't think special in any way. I had Tacos Dorados and tamales. These are beef tacos with freshly deep fried hard shells and they were awesome. The refried beans and rice were also freshly made; the beans had particularly good flavor and were miles ahead of the gloppy, tasteless, sat-in-the-pot three days beans you sometimes encounter.

I think a good mark of a Mexican restaurant's authenticity is whether they serve horchata or not. Horchata is a mildly sweet drink made from rice, vanilla & cinnamon served on ice. It's the perfect drink cool off a mouth on fire (think Thai iced coffee) and El Granjero makes their own from scratch.

The service was average, and the decor was functional but attractive. Prices are good; we fed 2 adults and 2 children for a little over $30. But the food is where it's at, and El Granjero is the model of a small, authentic Mexican restaurant using fresh ingredients to make great, cheap food.
