We stayed at the JW Marriott March 5-8. The Marriott is situated in a spot very convenient to many attractions - museums, river walks, dining. Had the weather been more agreeable, we would have taken advantage of these attractions.
Tip: skywalks link the Marriott to many area attractions. Use the skywalks to save your shoes, if visiting in inclement weather.
The only on site restaurant is Six One Six, aside from Starbucks, which has limited hours. We did not eat there, as it was a little nicer of a dining experience than we wanted. We were disappointed that there were no other choices. Then, we discovered that the skywalk on the second level connects to not the Amway, a sister hotel. The facilities there are larger, and offer more options.
We had a couples massage and enjoyed it a lot. It's well worth the money. The waiting area for spa services is not very spa-like. It is merely a hotel room, with exactly the same decoration as any of their hotel rooms. I would like to see management committ to the spa and appoint the rooms appropriately.
The fitness room was well stocked, clean and had several machines, all in working order.
I agree with previous posters, the hotel smells amazing - even the steam room has a eucalyptus scented option.
Be prepared, parking is $19 per day (self park) or $29 per day (valet).

Room Tip: River view

Dear Snousie,

Thank you very much for joining us and for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback about your visit! I am happy to hear you found our skywalk system to be advantageous to your experience. It can be very handy to go from the arena to convention center without leaving the comforts of climate control! I am delighted to hear you had such a great experience at the spa and I will be sure to reiterate your feedback about the décor. We sincerely hope to have you stay with us again the next time you visit Grand Rapids.

At your service,

Stayed one night for a work convention and was impressed! From check in to check out superb service with an exceptional front desk! Our room was lovely and clean! Enjoyed room service with coffee and an assortment of baked goods. Easy walk to restaurants, etc. I would highly recommend it!

Stayed only one night at this hotel during our short trip to Grand Rapids. It is very clean and modern. The view of the river is beautiful! The location could not be any better if you are planning to walk around downtown. Although the temperature was in the single digits we still walked to the bars and restaurants from the hotel. The rooms are large and spacious. The only reason I did not give the rating "Excellent" is because the lobby area has such a strong aroma it gave me a headache if I spend too much time there. The other guests in my party also discussed how strong the aroma was. The aroma in the guest rooms are not nearly as strong as the lobby. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Grand Rapids!

Sure you don't have views of Lake Michigan at the JW, but you do have views of the Grand River which are breathtaking and great sunsets. Situated in a perfect corner of downtown Grand Rapids, the JW ranks with any five star Chicago hotel. You are within walking distance of very cool restaurants, the convention center and arena, museums and much more.

Rooms are nicely equipped. TV has bluetooth for your iPhone so you can listen to music. We stayed in a corner suite which has great views from both the bedroom and living room.

Nice compact fitness center and spa with full service menu. Indoor lap pool very nice with plenty of lounge chairs (and kids on the weekend). Spa and two steam rooms. No locker room.

Lounge is amazing set against the Grand River and huge expansive windows. Live music on Saturday night. Top notch restaurant if you feel like staying in. Breakfast buffet is just OK, ordering off the menu is the best choice.

Marriott reward customers will enjoy the concierge level (worth extra $$$ if not a member). Complimentary drinks (wine and beer on weekends), great snacks, continental breakfast and espresso machine.

Huge conference area on second floor and connects to the downtown skyway so you can walk to the arena without venturing outside.

Overall amazing service and experience. Great weekend getaway compared to Chicago.

Room Tip: Concierge level 19-23 is best bet.
