We've eaten at San Chez a few times. The food is good and there is a nice selection of tapas. I do feel however it is on the expensive side for the amount of food you get.

When I was first was uprooted from New Orleans and came to Grand Rapids my gracious hosts took me to what they thought would be some good food to ease my loss of some seriously good cooking. This was one of them. I know the kind of restaurant San Chez wishes it was. I've been to Tapas places that are astounding. This place is not. It just seems to not even try. It's food is usually mediocre, sometimes quite good. But the price. Come on. What the Gilmore group has done is just crank out really over priced to expensive places with mostly chain restaurant quality food. They have done this mostly because there wasn't much competition in Grand Rapids just a few years ago but also because they felt Grand Rapidians don't know any better anyway. I have watched Grand Rapids change over the years and I hope this place and all the Gilmore group restaurants either step up or stand down.
What this town really and truly needs is good street food. The old powers that are afraid of competition need to allow for honest to goodness street vendors to set up shop. You'd better darn well believe restaurants like this one would be vacant.
But what do I know.

This restaurant is actually two distinct businesses within one...the cafe is open for breakfast and I think lunch. We were in town for a wedding and ate here for breakfast twice. The second time we came with 9+ people. They handled the large party well. The coffee they were serving happened to be named Brazilian Bob-O-Link..excellent. We tried everything from the omelets, to oatmeal, french toast, yogurt parfait to eggs over easy...all great. The space itself is bright and cheerful, with big windows and cute decor. The service was very good. The location is perfect for those staying in the many hotels downtown, a short, easy walk.

The style is neat how you order small & share but it ends up being quite expensive if you order enough to eat a full meal.
