“Like an angel gave birth in my mouth”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

Apparently, we have never had a basic salad prepared correctly. Nor have we had a medley of warm fall vegetables done right. And I have had nicoise before, even on my wedding day, but never like this. Grove is pricey, but we are already saving for our next visit. Bravo!

“Big City Sophistication/Small Town Charm”
Reviewed January 17, 2012

On my first trip to Grand Rapids, I had dinner with a friend on a Friday night. We did not make reservations, and the joint was jumping at about 8:30, but they managed to seat us after a brief wait. The restaurant is casually elegant, with a very warm bar area and a few adjacent cafe tables, and a dining room seating area. We sat at the cafe tables, and the bar crowd was festive and pretty stylish. The cocktails were really first rate, and the prices were a bit less than I have come to expect in Chicago (though they were equal in quality). We had really great service; prompt, friendly, and fun. We started with the squash soup, which was crazy delicious and very reasonably priced. We also had a cheese plate, which was nicely presented. We ended with an amazing dessert, a salted fudge concoction that was divine, and a nice portion size--not overly huge. The only misstep food-wise was a mushroom and fava bean risotto, which was well-cooked, but just lacked zing. Overall, we loved this place. The Grove serves some dishes that could beat out many restaurants in major cities, and its prices are much more reasonable. And while there is a upscale vibe to the Grove, it is very relaxed and unpretentious. I would recommend reservations on the weekends, especially before 8 p.m.

“An Uptown find with eclectic style and taste”
Reviewed December 31, 2011

We've gone to this new restaurant twice now, and both times were way above expectations. The chef is an artist. The service is excellent. But it's not a large restaurant, so if you're going, make sure you have reservations because it's nearly always full. Oh, and if you're one of those who gripe about upscale restaurants that serve you a small portion on a large plate and charge an arm and a leg, then this ain't your place! It's pricey, but the food is outstanding. Good things come in small packages. (Don't miss the desserts, either! I especially was fond of the dark chocolate fudge.)

“Good food but too cramped a space and very loud...”
Reviewed December 24, 2011

Went to the Grove with friends...a repeat visit for them and first time for us. we were a party of 5. Our reservation was for 730pm on a Wednesday night. The table wasn't ready so we went to the sliver of a bar area to fight the crowd for a drink. The bar area is like a corridor. The bar is on one side and there are tables along a partition opposite the bar. The partition separates the bar area from the restaurant. We were shoulder to shoulder with other patrons. The bar seats were all taken as were the tables. In fact people were dining at the tables in the bar area which was awkward as servers had to thread their way through the bar patrons.

We were seated 40+ minutes late. Service was good. The bread plate for the table with flavored butters and infused oil was delicious. There is a modest charge associated with the bread plate. Our first courses were delicious. I had the warm winter vegetable salad and my husband had the chicken confit. My main course of the duck was good...a little fatty and a more modest portion than I expected. My husband had the Spanish mackeral and was underimpressed. The dessert of dark chocolate with carmel and sprinkle of sea salt (don't know what it was called) was sublime. Our friends all seemed happy with their dinner choices.

The only reason we would hesitate to go back here is because of the ambiance. Too loud and we don't dig the 'flow' of the place. It really is a tight space. Also a 40 + minute wait when you have a reservation is the kiss of death for my husband....

“Local, Sustainable, and Delicious!”
Reviewed December 10, 2011

This was our second trip to Grove and there is a reason why the place was packed both times. The service was wonderful, knowledgeable about the menu. The menu is printed everyday to reflect the ingredients that they are able to get. This not chain restaurant food, it is a foodie delight. Grove combines fresh local ingredients with skill preparation and beautiful presentation. The have an extensive wine and beer list, and everything from the appetizers to the desserts have been excellent. Grove sets the standard for farm to table, supporting local food producers and producing gourmet meals in a upscale but not pretentious setting.
