I recently attended a concert at Van Andel and this gem of a restaurant is tucked in right next to the arena. After a 45 minute wait (They were upfront about this and we agreed) we were seated in the patio area with comfortable couches and coffee tables. This made enjoying the company of our friends easy and relaxing because it felt like home and there was little "bar" noise.

The food was outstanding, we all had one of the burgers and many appetizers to try most of the menu. The mussels with Bacon and cream sauce is a sleeper hit and I would highly recommend them.

The beer selection is huge and our server was unable to give quality suggestions so we were left guessing. With any craft beer, the alcohol content can be high so pay attention when ordering your favorite style beer and take it into consideration. We ended up with a couple IPA pitchers and were happy with our choice.

There are a lot of cheaper restaurants in a two block radius but if you have never been to Hopcat, spend the extra dollars and check it out!

The hotel recommended Hop Cat for lunch for my 14 year old daughter and I. She ordered a burger and added blue cheese. It came with crack fries and we added the beer cheese dip. I ordered a Cobb salad. She very much enjoyed her burger. The crack fries were as good as advertised and we both really liked the dip. My Cobb was very good. Few seem to make it with avocado anymore but the celery they used instead was a good lo-cal and low fat welcome substitution. $6 for a pint of hard cider seemed a little steep but at least I enjoyed the local brew. For lunch the atmosphere was pretty low key standard brew pub casual. Our server was attentive and the food came out in a timely manner. All in all a win.

As a former resident of Grand Rapids until 1986 and with lots of Family still living there, I try to visit at least three or four times a year. A visit to HopCat is alway a must. It is situated downtown in a vibrant area with many things to do and see, and of course shopping. HopCat has a beer list that is second to none and food that is varied and very well done. And did I mention the "crack fries"? The decor is very casual but the clientele is a mix of preppy, body art and business workers who all enjoy the downtown scene. There are burgers, wraps, salads and soup and all are good with beer. This is a place to see if you are in the area.

We had received a recommendation to check this place out. We were in town for our anniversary to tour different breweries. When we tried to go to Hop Cat for dinner, it was too crowded so we came back a couple hours later for dessert and beer.
To be honest, this was our least favorite and felt like it had a lot more hype than it deserved. Overall, Hop Cat has a pretty decent vibe. If you're just looking for a nice, vibrant spot for dinner and big beer list, go for it. This is the kind of place you should go and plan to stick around at for awhile. If you're just there for try out the house beers, make it a short trip and try the off-hours. This place gets insanely crowded and stays that way and there was a feeling that we were inconveniencing our server with our dessert and flight order.
On our trip, the flight of house brews consisted of 2 sours, 1 IPA, 1 Double IPA, and a Hefeweizen. I expected the multiple IPA offerings with a name like Hop Cat but I wasn't expecting a double dose of sour on top of that. Sours and even IPA's (to some extent) are not the sort of beers that are going to find a huge audience. When 4 of a brewery's 5 beers consist of really particular styles, it made me wonder who the brewer was really brewing for.
However, outside of the house beers, the tap and bottled beer selection was fantastic. Plenty of Michigan beers making an appearance on the beer menu and something for everyone.
The dessert we had was delicious (an ice cream sandwich consisting of apple ice cream between 2 apple oatmeal cookies) but the over-crowded bar and house brews at the time kept us from making a return the next day. There were other places we were more interested in trying and we were only in town for the weekend. When we visit Grand Rapids again, we'd probably check the website to see what the house brews are before returning.

Was in town on business and came to Hopcat for lunch and it didn't disappoint. Huge beer selection, great house beer brewed on site and very good burger. Would highly highly recommend to anyone - especially beer lovers.
