Very kind staff. The owner is overwhelmed with a claim to fame as a published author. A very long wait, but we were on vacation and were not bothered. The complaint was they ran out of everything from whitefish to waffle cones with the influx of customers which limited the food choices.

When we are called from shore of Lake Michigan to that of Lake Superior, we head to grand Marais and the diner. It has the cimbined atmosphere of soda shoppe, deli, and buffalo burgers! True, service is slower...just don't expect Big City speed at top of Upper Peninsula, friendly waits, no one seems to mind. Grown kids visiting from West US praise malts, grands love the coffee. Owner- wife a celeb for two recently published books...where does she fin writing time--it's always filled when we visit!?!

Wonderful food in a completely restored diner (read the back of the menu!). These folks work their batuties off to bring you great food. Club sandwiches piled high with the real stuff (no wax meat), great soup and chili, wonderful old-fashioned soda fountain service. It's clear that most people who wrote reviews here didn't read the back of the menu. If you do, you'll learn something about the "one waitress." She and her husband own the place and they followed a dream: that's why the food is so good! Ellen is also a seriously good author. Check this place out and don't complain about the service: everything here is done with care and a good dose of love. The kitchen is tiny and only so many plates can come out at a time. We got there a bit early for lunch and were seated and served quickly, so be smart. If you arrive at the height of the lunch hour, you may have to wait a bit, but that will give you time to take the place in (and read the back of the menu)! It's completely worth every minute you spend there. Eat your heart out, fast food America!

The food at the diner is very good and worth the wait. There is only one waitress and she was going like crazy, but couldn't keep up. If you are patient, this is a great place to eat - lots of "character."

We visited this restaurant in early June and thought the slow service may have been due to the early season and not enough help. I decided to write a review, but changed my mind to give them a chance to get into the season. I have to say that reading the reviews from the entire season they did not learn their lesson. slow food production, slow service. Good food when we finally got it. I watched a large party that were not served at the same time and they waited for the second half of the table to be served after they finished eating. It was disorganized and walking into the restaurant leaves you wondering what to do and where to go. The owner needs to step away from the stove and watch his restaurant run for a night to capture all that needs to be improved. Best wishes for a better second season and lessons learned.
