“We left!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

We went in the wrong door and were pretty much scolded by the waitress who took us through the restaurant to the "in" door. We waited there for several minutes until she came back and took us to a table. She gave us menus and we waited for her to come back to take the order. She finally came and then told us that it would be 45 minutes before we got any food. It didn't matter what we ordered, it was going to take at least 45 minutes.
We left.

“Where's Gordon Ramsey when you need him?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

This place needs Gordon Ramsey and the Hoarders show!
Disorganized with poor layout! Very cluttered! Terrible service!! Sitting at your table for a half an hour while a staff member sits at the table next to you and ignores you! Rules on the menu, not focused on the customer at all!
Good food and has so much potential! They just act like they do as they please as there is not much choice is beautiful Grand Marais, Michigan!
This interesting place needs help!!

“This has got to be the most unique restaurant I've ever been in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2012

First of all, we sat in the back area. The front diner has great ambiance but it was a very warm day and it's sort of hot up there as it faces the west sunset. We got our order in for 2 pizzas. Now we had time to wander around the place. I see some Japanese tourists were sitting in the front corner for the full-on diner experience, eating tons of French chili(?)fries and some exotic burgers having a great time. Some pseudo intellectuals were sitting by the windows chit-chatting. We found the soda pop menu and dove right in. Grape Ne-hi, Ginger beer extra sharp, cherry cream soda, orange dreamcicle or cherry wine soda. As a veteran of Coca Cola world, I know my soda pop, but this place had em all--the ones from the small, old bottling shops that still produce the good ol' stuff. If you really like a certain hard to find pop, the owner will sell you a whole case out of the back room.
Now pizzas arrive. Super, fresh made crust. Delicious. We brought some back to the hotel and it was just as good next morning. The main reason we got pizza was we were hungry and this isn't really a short order kitchen. It takes a bit longer we hear so pizza was the way to go for a larger table.
The owner who made our pizza pies came out and we asked her to sign her book we bought. I think here husband was behind the deli counter but they don't let him out. He seems friendly enough and he likes soda pop. Don't expect Applebees or Chili's if you go here, this is an authentic, weird deli, pizza, restaurant. The sell new and used books too. This place fits in with Grand Marais perfectly.

“I was expecting more”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012

I have to admit I was unsure about the restaurant the minute we walked in but decided to go with it. First of all the waitress seem to be really distracted and was annoyed that we were even there. We looked at the menu and when we went to order it seemed like they were out of everything we wanted. The food we did get was extremely over cooked, no taste and just disgusting. I could not even eat half of it. However, my boys got their homemade pizza, it was different but was good. We all should have skipped the menu and just got pizza and ice cream.

“A different experience from most other reviewers”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

August 26th or thereabouts the date was at about 2 in the afternoon - we were making our way from Taquaminom Falls over to Pictured Rocks via the much longer senic route through all the small towns inbetween. When we arrived in Grand Marias it was ghostly quiet, this little town nestled on a very small, picturesque bay. Starved, we headed straight for the West Bay Diner, having read about it in a guide book like many other "reviewers". Our plans were to order up a nice carryout and continue on our way to one of the many beautiful senic pull over sites between Grand Marias and pictured Rocks where we would have a nice picnic on a beautiful afternoon.
NO SUCH LUCK! We walked into the diner, there was one person reading a book, I guess waiting for a coffee or something. The waitress passed by us twice without saying a word - finally my wife asked if they were open - bewildered at lack of attention, to which the waitress quickly grabbed menus and replied yes, and showed us to a table. As we were being led down the hall my wife explained that we were there to purchase a carryout as we were going to have a picnic. The waitress excused herself and returned a moment later to inform us that "they were not prepared to make up carryouts today". My wife and I looked at each other with amazement, thanked her and left. What kind of place (with no other customers in it) is not prepared to do a carryout? We saw carryout containers; it's the same food we'd have if dined in... how bizarre was this. We checked out what they call a grocery store which was attached to the hardware store thinking we'd purchase the makings of a picnic ourselves and assemble our meal at the picnic site. The food selection was limited and most of it looked like it had been on the shelves since last winter - it was a bit depressing. We found out from an unrelated local business owner also located in Grand Marias that the Diner folks are a bit quirky; he said, "yeah, if they don't feel like doing something like a carryout or a certain dish at any given time even if its on the menu, they just won'y do it". It was very wierd to say the least!
