Room was older style but clean. We stayed here one night prior to starting our backpacking trip in Pictured Rocks NP. Breakfast in the morning was good but nothing to recognize. The one bad incident from this place was a double charge on our credit card one month after we had stayed there. Managements lack of interest reversing the charge is why I rate this hotel a two.

Room Tip: we had a room on the west side.

Remember this is the U.P. It's not fancy. Just clean, comfortable rooms. We went here in late July 2011 and only intended to stay 1 night. Spent the next day on the beautiful beach and decided to stay another night. We were here during the worst heatwave in years, There is no air conditioning because you never need it here. We were given a fan and slept with the windows open to hear the waves on the beach. The staff was very friendly, more than accommodating, and there was a free continental breakfast. Pool is nothing special but the beach is what matters here. Beautiful Lake Superior sunsets and agate hunting on the nearly deserted beach was great. Had dinner at the Lake Superior Brewing Company and had a great time in this laid back, relaxing vacation spot..

The "newly renovated rooms" were clean and comfortable. What they lacked in frills was totally surpassed by friendly staff and the spectacular location. We were even told where we could find wood for a bonfire on the beach (from tree trimmings) We took advantage and had a great time. terrific little town I look forward to my next visit.

We are two adults and a Golden Dog who traveled to Grand Marais, MI for a week in August. weather was 75-80 each day, nights were cool. You can choose rooms or a cabin, we chose the cabin. Cabins are pretty basic, but comfortable. There is a cove by the cabin that is great swimming and fires on the beach at night, you can look across the bay and see the little town, you can look up and see more stars than you have ever seen before. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Beaches are on other side and also the most beautiful sunsets. This is in the Upper Pennisula on Lake Superior so know before you go, it is vast and unspoiled. it will take you an hour to get anywhere, but the scenery and activities are worth it. So much to do, so much to see. The people working at the North Shore Lodge are the friendliest and kindest people you will ever meet. There is nothing fancy here but you will come away with a whole new perspective on life. It's a special life "across the bridge". (Mackinac Bridge)

Room Tip: cabins are very basic but comfortable, contiental breakfast at the Lodge every morning

My husband and I went on a 4 day trip to see Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, beginning at the east end and working our way west along HWY 58. Upon arrival, the (I think new) owners were extremely accommodating and helpful (which seemed to be how most "yoopers" are.) The room we stayed in was your basic economy room, needed a little updating, however was very clean - I didn't see any hair or sand in the corners (this hotel is surrounded by beach), etc. Our room had AC (which we didn't need being on Lake Superior), however I don't think all the rooms have AC. The surprise was waking up the next morning to find the beautiful surroundings. Just outside the lodge door was a sign that said "agate beach", and a short walk led to a long sand beach covered with beautiful stones. Hubby and I could have spent hours there just picking through stones. Hint: look up what "agates" are before you leave - many of the stones were beautiful. The water was SO clear and surprisingly warm. The lodge provided continental breakfast and was your basic coffee/juice/cold cereal/canned fruit/toast/bagels/etc, with a small outside deck if you wanted to enjoy the outdoors while sipping coffee. The breakfast was nothing thrilling, but certainly adequate prior to heading out hiking. They also had a small gift shop attached with cute "touristy" merchandise. We will return. Also, if you'd like a cute little art/jewelry/gifty/fair trade shop, stop at "The Fishnet House". The owner sells her handmade jewelry (reasonably priced) and other local artists' items.

We decided to stay in Grand Marais after a day of playing in Munising and along the north shore of MI.

I personally thought it was very quaint. Yes, when you first walk into the lobby, there's some sort of odor, but don't worry, it's not in the rooms, and it's not gut wrenching. Checkin and out was very quick and efficient.

We were on the 2nd floor with exterior entry, because it was cheaper and we had a view of the lake. Granted, you're not "right there" on the lake, but you can sit on your chairs outside your door and see it. We took at walk to the lake, over the sand dunes and watched the sunset. Breathtaking is all I can say!

Pool was quite cold, but very clean. They are doing some remodeling, so just ignore that. The hot tub was wonderful however. This was an outside walk for us, but if you stay in one of the interior rooms, you don't have to.

Room was old fashioned, which I think is still very cool. The tub, sink and toiler were forest green. I think it's good for kids to have a little taste of "yester-year". Everything was very clean and in prefect working order. Two windows in the room allowed plenty of fresh air to circulate. I don't know if there was an a/c in the room, but we never needed it.

Breakfast was very good. It's in a little spot next to the lobby They also have a regular restaurant, so they needed to keep the complimentary breakfast out of the way. The seating is plentiful however and we had no trouble.

We didn't get interent connection. Don't know if that's because we're so far in the toolies, or if it's a hotel thing. But you know what....to be without a computer for a night really isn't such a bad thing. Walk to the lake and just enjoy....

Grand Marais is a very cute little town. We ate at Lake Superior Brewing company which offered great food at great prices. The pizza is wonderful! Very casual and laid back. I wish we would've looked around a bit more, but we had to keep moving.

Overall, I was very happy with this little place. Let's face it, Grand Marais is not the biggest town, so your choices are limited. I would stay here again for sure.
