Best Western Beacon Inn
Ranked #1 of 6 Hotels in Grand Haven
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 31, 2013

This hotel is clean and quiet, and the pool area is enjoyable for young children and families. The location is easy to find and within 2-5 miles of downtown Grand Haven and the Grand Haven State Park. The office staff is friendly. We stay here annually for the Coast Guard Festival in July.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are so happy hear you had a great time at Coast Guard Festival. We are located right on US 31 in Grand Haven about a mile and a half from the downtown and Grand Haven State Park Beach. Our Courtyard building is a great section for families. The courtyard area provides a nice grassy area where kids can run and play games that is not by a parking lot. We are happy to hear you enjoy our Coast Guard Festival and we look forward to seeing you next year.

This hotel is very clean and accommodating. We had two rooms, one being a handicap room. The "handicap" room was on the third floor (not a good idea in case of fire). The roll-in shower needs a sturdy bath/shower chair for those who do not bring a roll-in shower chair with them and need to transfer. Otherwise all was very comfortable and staff was accommodating.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am happy to hear that you found your room to be very clean. All of handicapped accessible rooms meet the guidelines of the ADA. We also do have seats for the roll-in showers that are available upon request. A majority of people who use the handicapped rooms do not require the seats so in an effort to keep them in good shape they are not kept in the rooms. I am happy to hear you had a clean and comfortable stay and we look forward to seeing you in the future.

Stayed one night on the way to Chicago to see the beach. This is an amazing area, nice local restaurants, a beach that makes you think your on the ocean coast. We stayed in the newer part with inside entrances, the rooms were great, clean and all the staff was friendly. We will be staying here again in the near future!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Travel and Leisure Magazine voted Grand Haven beach number 2 on its list of best secret beaches on Earth. We are located a mile and half from the Grand Haven State Park Beach and the downtown shopping area. We also work very hard to make sure every guest has a clean and comfortable stay. I am so happy to hear that staff was helpful and friendly. We look forward to seeing you soon.

This was a "nice" hotel- not the Taj mahal or anything but what was expected- clean, convenient and workable. Was dissapointed that the breakfast was only served till 9 am- too early for us on vacation to take advantage of.

When in Grand Haven, we always try to stay at the Beacon Best Western. The rates are reasonable and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Great service at the front desk also, we found them to be very helpful!

The hotel was clean. However, the hotel was filled to capacity. But, they were not able to handle the huge breakfast crowd. There was only one server -- she was running to re-fill everything! They ran out of yogurts, silverware, napkins, eggs, bread, muffins, milk, etc. It was a ZOO!!! You'd think this was their first time with a full house -- it was the 4th of July week end -- so they should have been prepared. Also frustrating was that the staff behind the check in desk didn't even bother to come help the poor girl out! Great Team Work! Overall I would return here for a visit -- but, next time I'd know that they do not know how to handle a large breakfast crowd! We were in line for about 20 minutes -- and this was for a typical breakfast buffet!!!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We strive to make sure every guest has a clean and comfortable stay. During the summer months we are very busy and often full. Our breakfast bar is very popular especially at 9:00 am. If you do not like waiting in line a better option is to go earlier in the morning when there are less families. We do make sure we have extra food stocked and ready to go but it does need to be brought in from our prep kitchen. The front desk clerks do help out when they can but they do need to be the desk to answer phone calls, check guests out, and answer any questions that guests might have during their stay.

I have stayed in many hotels. This is the only hotel that has a sign in the bathroom that says that the towels are counted and you will be charged for any missing towels. The room is clean. There are many good, competent , friendly people that work at the hotel. I however, will not return under any circumstances. I wanted to lay out at the beach, and did not have any sheets or towels for that, so I asked the owner if I could take some sheets to the beach.

He said no, I could not, and one of his assistants explained that if they did that for me, they would have to do that for everyone. This, despite the fact that I offered to pay a rental fee, put down a deposit, and pay a cleaning fee. If everyone really needed sheets or towels for the beach, then the hotel has a business opportunity by providing that service for their guests. If there is not such a great demand, then they would not have to do "that for everyone".

This is supposed to be a hotel that attracts people going to the beach (even though it is a few miles from the beach). Management should accommodate reasonable requests related to that fun and vacationing objective.

I was told by the hotel that there was a Meijer's down the street where I could buy some sheets. There are other hotels in the area also, even world class hotels a short drive away in Grand Rapids, all for the same price or much less. The hotel can find a million reasons why they cannot loan out a few sheets (the ones I bought, and brought to the beach were white and spotless after shaking off the sand,as of course I knew they would be). I can find at least one good reason why I will not give this hotel my $6,000.00 a year in business. Thats how capitalism works: Its a two way street.
Note: If a hotel guest was going to abuse the sheet or towel "privilege", they would just take them to the beach and return them, not ask permission from the desk.

Room Tip: Choose second floor to reduce noise above.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to review our hotel. In order to keep down costs we do not allow guests to remove towels or bedding from our rooms. Many hotels have these signs and some even have price list that they will charge you if items are missing. We do not allow our linens to be taken to the beach in an effort to keep our linens nice for future guests. We are also not a beach hotel or a 5-star resort where they might have the extra amenities of beach towel rentals or provide a gift shop where you can purchase them on property.
