You won't find burgers and fries but you will enjoy fresh, different foods. This place just opened. Everything ismade in house. The soups are extraordinary and the shrimp wraps were so delicious. I am ready to go back to try their "bowls"!

With foods inspired by islands like Hawaii, Cuba and Jamaica, Grand Haven Islands is an excellent and desperately-needed addition to the GH dining scene. The big difference is that GH Islands makes their foods -- an excellent pineapple-papaya salsa, coco bread, all desserts -- fresh on-site, and it shows. It bills itself as a takeout place, but has a sit-in area and a nice porch too.

I visited in a Sunday afternoon and had a bowl, which is island rice, black bean salad, tortilla chips, the salsa, and your choice of additions like jerk chicken or lime shrimp and a several sauces to choose from - the citrus mojo was perfect with the shrimp. They also have tamales, shrimp salad sliders, a vegan papaya salad, soups and some other nice choices. There are vegetarian options.

Unusually for a take-out place, dessert was top-notch: a banana nut trifle with rum cake and gianduja -- perfect blend of tastes and spices, these are obviously people who know how to do more than deep-fry a hot dog.

It is not located downtown, but it is well worth crossing 31 to visit. One of the three owners used to be head chef at the Arboreal Inn and all of them worked at the Village Baker in Spring Lake. It makes for a nice mix: the three are at different points in their respective careers, and the restaurant concept seems to accommodate that: GH Islands also as a food truck near the skate park and the Y by Mulligan's Hollow.

GH Islands has been open about a month but already seems to be getting some good word of mouth -- we were there just before closing time and several people dropped in to get take-out. Great, fun addition to GH, I will definitely be back.
