We stayed in the Hawk's Nest #58. First of all, the view is exactly as shown. It is beautiful. Aside from that, this property has not received much care in the last few months. When we arrived we found the place to be dusty. The sheets smelled like they came from your grandmas closet and had not been freshened. I really didn't like that at all. When it was time for a shower this morning I found the shower on the first floor didn't work. We paid for two but only one works. On our way out of the resort we reported this to the person at the desk. She said they would send someone. We said we preferred not to have plumber while we are out but if they could replace the linen it would be appreciated. She assured us she would have this done. Well, on our return we found nothing had been done and the linen still smelled like grandma's attic . I'm very disappointed. We usually stay in Traverse City and I guess next time we'll return to our old digs.

Thank you for your comments. I apologize that the housekeeping and maintenance of this unit to be lacking during your visit. The condominiums are privately owned, however, our staff should have freshened the unit prior to your check in and ensured that appliances and fixtures were in working order.

Please accept our sincere apologies and keep in mind that we have four small hotels and many vacation homes and condominiums available to rent. It is our hope that you would provide us the opportunity to show you we can do a much better job.

Warmly,

50's couple over from Australia traveling through Michigan over Easter. Stayed at the Homestead and was pleased we did. Yes rooms need a little updating but they are still lovely. We stayed in the Little Belle suites and had a lovely room overlooking the village. Everything worked and we had no complaints.
Off season was very quiet but if you want relaxation without a crowd at great prices, this is the place. Very easy to see how spectacular this resort would be in mid-summer but rates are higher then. All staff were very friendly and we had a wonderful dinner at Nonna's. We wouldn't hesitate staying there again or recommending this resort to others seeking some quiet off-season time.

Room Tip: For a room with a view ask for an upstairs suite.

My husband and I stayed at the Homestead for an early spring getaway weekend. We knew that it would be pretty quiet at that time of year, and were at peace with that since we just wanted to relax. Check in went smoothly, and very nice woman welcomed us and gave us directions to our rooms and information about the resort. We stayed in the Little Belle suites. The suites were cute, clean and pretty comfortable. The first suite we stayed had problems with the hot water heater and it would not even fill up the whirlpool tub. We were moved to a second room, and the hot water heater worked much better. The second room was a bit musty smelling due to the fact that it was partially underground, it wasn't really bad though. It kind of just smelled like "up north" cabin. As previous reviewers have stated, bedding badly needs to be updated. The sheets were pilly, and most hotels have switched from quilts to duvets, which would have been nice. All in all, it was a nice place to get some R&R and I can see how beautiful the property must be in the summer. I thought it was a good value for the $117 we paid in way off season, but would have been disappointed if we had paid high season prices.

Kacampbell,
We appreciate your constructive comments regarding your recent stay. The Homestead has recently updated bedding at Stony Brook Lodge and The Inn...and sheets for all accommodations. You're right, the area is even more spectacular and beautiful in the summer months. And, it provides a great opportunity to enjoy the many activities and amenities the resort and area has to offer.

We do hope to have the opportunity to have you as our guest in the future.

Best,

I've been to the Homestead several years ago in the summer during peak season and loved it. This place is not worth the drive during the off season. Almost everything is shut down, only Nonna's was open and the grocery store. We stayed at the Inn and the view was beautiful and the room was too but we ended up driving the 30 minutes into Traverse City every day because Glen Arbor and The Homestead was so dead. It was also pretty run down. Stairs crumbling and the pathways eroding... It's sad, because the place has so much potential, even in the off season. Offer campfires, fishing poles, bike rentals, guest breweries or wineries or an indoor pool and they would have a ton more traffic when it's the peak of summer.

Good Morning MalloryBandy,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent visit to The Homestead. The resort's operating schedule does fluctuate with the season and occupancy. This year, in particular, we were forced to push back the schedule. Typically the pools, restaurants and shops will open May 1 for the season. This year we still had snow. It was terribly cold, and horribly unseasonable weather for us. In fact, The Inn stairs began to crumble (which you saw) as a result of the long, hard winter. We are in the process of repairing them and the other places on property that succumbed to the season.

We are sorry you weren't able to enjoy the property this time but do hope that you will return again soon to experience all the amenities that you enjoy.

Sincerely,

Adriene Kokowicz

We took a chance on this resort and were very pleased. I definitely understand where other reviewers are coming from when they mention the young staff and there updates needing to be made, but it's still really nice for what it is. It's on the beach, there are restaurants on site, playgrounds, 2 pools, and a grocery store. There isn't anywhere like it close by. We love Glen Arbor and this allows us to be close to the town and the water. We stayed in Fiddler's Pond which had two double beds and a deck off the back of our room overlooking a little creek running behind it. Every morning I would walk a minute to the gym then to the grocery store for coffee. My kids loved playing on the playground and going to the store for ice cream. Our room was clean and updated. The staff wasn't overly friendly but I'm not on vacation with them and don't care to make small talk.

Room Tip: If you don't mind driving to the beachfront, stay in Fiddler's Pond, especially if you have...

I almost gave the Homestead a "Poor" rating, but upgraded them to "Average" due to the manager making some concessions on a disappointing stay. We just wanted a mini-get away with our dog for two nights and the Homestead is one of several Northern Michigan resorts that offer "pet friendly" accommodations.

We were offered a ground floor room with two beds in Fiddler's Pond, which is right next to the reception building. The room itself was very dark, with dated carpeting and worn bedding. The two side chairs were hard and uncomfortable, the mini fridge froze our bottled water and the bathtub faucet dripped constantly. Sleep quality was poor due to soft, old mattresses and flat pillows. There is no clock in the room, which we thought was pretty odd.

We left in the morning to go to Glen Arbor for breakfast as everything is currently shut down at the Homestead (which they told us about when reserving the room). Upon returning around 11:00 am we noticed there had been no housekeeping, so we proceeded to shower and get ready to go out again. While we were using the bathroom the housekeeping staff knocked on the door. My husband informed the staff member that we would be leaving within 30 minutes and would be out the rest of the afternoon. The response was, "We have a lot of rooms to get to today."

Upon returning at 4:30 PM the room was still not attended to so we attempted three times to dial housekeeping. No calls were picked up. We then called the front desk. She suggested that perhaps they had not cleaned our room because we had a dog and they never enter rooms where there is a dog. (This is really bizarre because we signed a statement on arrival that said we would NOT leave the dog in the room unattended). My husband just said to deliver some fresh towels and we'd be satisfied. The front desk told him he'd have to pick them up himself. So, he's off to get the towels and here comes the housekeeping staff. They said they can't get messages when they're cleaning at the "Pinnacle", so they didn't get our message. I accepted the fresh towels and as they were leaving, my husband arrived with more towels. Crazy situation. Not a big deal, but there should be a better system in place. In most hotels you have a hanging device to put on your doorknob that says "Privacy" or "Housekeeping Needed". Something as simple as that would have helped us.

As indicated, the manager, upon hearing about the issue, gave us a $25 adjustment to our bill, which I thought was acceptable. She seemed genuinely concerned about the confusion.

I would recommend the Homestead overall as a property, but probably only in the "high" season when everything is fully staffed and I'd recommend either staying in a condo overlooking the water or maybe the Inn, which is right on the beach. We had a lovely, though chilly, walk on the beach and enjoyed looking at a piece of a ship wrecked hull that had washed up.

Room Tip: Stick with anything with a water view. The buildings in the Village are very dated and dark.

The homestead is simply living off a great location. The resort is badly in need of an update. Also, the customer service is way off and quite frankly this seems to be due to young staff. This could be an amazing resort if updates were made. They are kind of the only gig in town so I suspect they will continue to do well but I wish they would fix this place up.
