We stayed here during a family trip with myself, husband, and 2 small children (4 and 6). Overall the experience at the hotel was okay. Our main purpose was to visit the Dunes (WHICH ARE FANTASTIC - KIDS LOVED THEM ALSO) so the hotel quality for this trip was secondary to us. We stayed in the Fiddler's Pond hotel portion (you can also rent cottages/houses/condos on the property). Room was clean and a nice size for our family with 2 queen beds. Also had fridge, coffee, and dvd player in room. Plenty of space for stuff as well as hooks we used to hang wet bathing suits on over tiled floor (little things make the difference :) ). Beautiful wooded area and nicely landscaped....nice pool area too. Pool was heated with a slide and also had hot tub. There was also a nice bonfire with smores on the beach on one of the nights we were there.

While we were there we did see a couple of dozen large ants in our room - not a big deal since this is in a densely wooded area, but may bother some people. Of course it would have been nicer without them. Pool hours for our pool were from 10 am to 8 pm - would have liked them to be longer that way you can start your day out beforehand at pool, or have more time after coming in from dinner. The other pool by the lake had longer hours, but was a drive to get there. Staff was friendly, but not knowledgeable (i.e. didn't know if they were have a bonfire, or how to pronounce items on the menu). Another weird thing was that every guest (including kids) were supposed to show i.d. to go to pool, restaurant/beach area (not a very welcoming feeling). I also assumed there would be a path to walk to the beach from our hotel, but this is not the case. You can drive to a parking lot then walk a ways - probably because of the terrain (hills and wooded everywhere). We ate at the Manitou Cafe there as well which was decent. Preferred going in town actually (don't miss Cherry Rebublic -it is okay to have dessert for dinner).

Not sure if we would stay here again (would probably rent an offsite cottage), but Sleeping Bear Dunes/Lake Michigan is great!!

Thank you for your recent visit and sharing your comments about the resort and area with us and others. Access to the pools and club facilities are limited to guests who rent directly through The Homestead (as opposed to a guest who rent directly from an owner) which necessitates us having access cards for all guests. We regret that the operating hours of the pool nearest your room didn’t coincide with some of the times you wished to use it. We appreciate the feedback and carefully consider guest comments before establishing the seasonal operating schedule. We do hope to have the opportunity to host you as our guest again in the future.

After an 8 hour drive we arrived at our destination. Beautiful reception area. However, when we arrived at our condo? cabin I thought shabby, shabby, shabby. Nothing looks updated since 1980's. To top it off, above the kitchen table hanging on a chain is a bare light bulb. I immediately notified the desk of my concern and distaste. A nice gentleman came to "look" at the situation but nothing was able to be done. Upon check out I voiced my disappointment. Manager Denny deducted a small sum from our balance and offered an upgrade if we stayed again, but I don't think we will. I expected much more from such a promising resort. Shame on Homestead. Also, they are tearing everything up for improvements and none of the shops were open. We did enjoy the workout room.

The condominiums and vacation homes on the rental program from The Homestead are privately owned residences. While we perform annual inspections to verify quality classifications and perform necessary repairs, there are unforeseen instances where maintenance issues arise. We regret that you experienced a maintenance problem during your visit.

Furthermore, we do follow up with the owners of the residences to communicate guest comments with regard to décor and furnishings so that they may consider them when making future upgrade plans. We will be certain to share your comments with the owner of this unit.

Let me begin with stating that almost everything was closed during Memorial Day weekend (after booking at least two months in advance and looking forward to getting away). One pool wasn't available, and the beach pool was quite a way from the parking lot (shuttles advertised; however, I never saw any running - just parked in front of the closed shops and restaurants). They had another swimming pool located at the Spa; however, you needed to get a "spa service" to access it. Would have been nice for guests staying during the time the other pool was being renovated to be offered access to the Spa pool.

No ice machines or easy access to ice. Went to the front desk for ice and staff could not get key to work to get ice. Waited, waited, waited. Ice finally materialized and I needed to split it with another guest who had come in after me to get ice due to a limited quanity. Was told later that ice was avialable at the one restaurant open for 4 hours in the evening. Seemed like everything was being dug up, redone, or worked on - yellow tape blocking access everywhere.

No snack bar or bar facilities open at the one swimming pool available; did have the facilility; just was closed for a wedding event. Would have been nice to know that almost the entire resort was closed during Memorial Day weekend. Staff seemed okay (not rude - just indifferent and very disorganized).

Excercise facilities were nice (my kids enjoyed them).

Didn't rate the restaurant because didn't use because hours were so limited. Since I booked so far in advance, a heads-up on all of the things that were closed would have been nice. Web site no help at all. No hours of operation, dates open, closed, etc.

The resort did offer 10% off of NEXT STAY because of all of the construction taking place.... Whatever. Seems like Traverse City would have been the better choice in hindsight. Stayed here years ago and remember a different place.

We would like to thank hollyautumn for contacting our management team independent of this review. That provided us the opportunity to speak directly with her about her concerns and find amicable resolution.

The Homestead has, in fact, embarked on a series of improvements that began this winter and have continued through the early summer. Unfortunately, the unseasonable spring weather experienced in Northern Michigan prevented us from completing as many of those projects as we’d hoped prior to Memorial weekend.

We appreciate the general understanding and excitement for the improvements.

We recently stayed at the Homestead for a family get together and it has really gone downhill. We have stayed here many times over the past 15 years and it now has new owners. They are working to fix it up but you can tell they are using the cheapest materials. A pool fence made of re-rod, how tacky! It seemed everyone in our group had some kind of problem with their room, we couldn't leave our room because the key wouldn't work on the door and maintenance had to fix the lock. Others had bugs, some had water damage. In every case the front desk said they couldn't move anyone due to being filled, this was with most of the lots being empty. The place is dark and only 1 of the restaurants was open and that didn't serve breakfast. The pool was empty and was a long way from being ready. It was obvious that they are in over their heads and won't pay for good help. The front desk was one of the rudest I have ever had to deal with. What a waste of time. We will never stay there again!

WillingSpouse,
All of us at The Homestead appreciate feedback when a guest feels they have been treated in a rude fashion. The resort has adopted an extensive guest service training program designed to teach, role play and practice the level of service our guests desire and deserve. Your comments have been share with our associates so that improvements may be made immediately.

The Homestead is not being operated under new ownership. The owner has owned the resort for 30+ years. In fact, in a downturned economy he has chosen to reinvest in the facilities with some 38 completed and scheduled improvements this year alone. The single most important objective in making those improvements is to improve our guest’s experience.

We apologize that the spring weather has prevented us from being further along on these projects as we’d hoped. In return for those inconveniences, guests are being offered a special offer for a future visit. It is our hope that you will return to experience the improvements once they are completed.

Went last weekend. It was bad. We had the just for 2 package. It was suspose to have breakfast and there was none. They did not give us a pass to the dunes which comes with the package. The dinner was so so so. the sheets need to be replace. they are very old. They said you get a 10% off at the store there. No store was open.
They should of told us nothing was open. I would of never stayed there. Well never again.

Remtana,
On behalf of all of us at The Homestead I would like to apologize for your recent experience. Clearly the execution of your package was not properly handled particularly in light of the delays with our construction projects and limited operating schedule.

We have created and are sending a pre-arrival letter to all of our guests to provide them with the operating schedule for all resort facilities. It is a great disappointment to us that our Reservations staff neglected to communicate the same information as the reservation was being made.

Your feedback is appreciated and we will share your comments with all of our associates as we continue to train for the quality guest service our guest’s desire and deserve.
