So, I booked this through secret escapes as an overnight stay for my boyfriends 24th birthday. Before booking I rang to check a few things and found the lady lovely and very helpful. A great start as this can be very off putting and me being very stubborn wouldn't book! As soon as we arrived the staff were lovely and very attentive. And then the room.. The woodland rooms new from 2012... WOW!!! Spacious, modern, clean it was just perfect. The bathroom was so big and pristine. Basically, over the moon. Dinner was included and staff were second to none, hard to find these days. Excellent dinner treated wonderfully and the spa... Amazing too! Rosie, a new girl did everything possible to make us comfortable during our spa experience and was perfect for the role. No overcrowding either. All in all one of the best stays I have had, and I'm very picky as I'm in customer service!! Thanks to all the staff would stay here and recommend to anyone.

After driving through the entrance and following the long road through the estate to this hotel, you arrive in a well lit and spacious car park. We were a party of 8 for a business dinner and received a very warm welcome on arrival. The entrance has quirky bowler hat sculptures on a reception table and then you step into the bar/restaurant 'Grill on the Hill'. The décor is tasteful and our round table was ready. We were shown to our seats which were all swivel chairs facing sideways so we could easily sit and turn towards the table. (this I have never seen in a restaurant before)!! The menu was excellent, and members of our group had special dietary requirements including gluten free options. This did not present a problem and there were several choices adaptable to suit. All courses were delicious! Nothing was too much trouble and the service was efficient and professional. The Hotel also boasts a Spa, but as we were on a business meeting, there was no time to explore the facilities. Based on the meal experience, I would definitely recommend this. I would like to return to sample the Spa and stay overnight as I am sure I won't be disappointed!

From the moment we arrived to the moment we checked out we could not fault this wonderful hotel. Our woodland room was gorgeous, spacious, tastefully decorated in a contemporary style, lovely comfy beds and lots of well thought out extras. I had booked the Escape for the Night deal as a fiftieth birthday treat for my friend. I had researched many spa hotels via the internet before choosing this hotel and I could not have been happier. The spa was superb, luxurious private changing rooms, attentive friendly and professional staff. We were planning on return stay within ten minutes of our arrival. We spent two hours making full use of the thermal bathing facilities, we especially liked the steam rooms and due to the booking system, it never felt overcrowded. This was followed by a lovely facial, thank you to Chloe. We returned to our room feeling totally relaxed and chilled out and to share our equally chilled bottle of bubbly and a have a girly chat. In the evening we thoroughly enjoyed our three course meal at Mr Fred's. We were feeling pleasantly tired after our spa visit and so we retired to our room and to our robes to chill out again. We had a peaceful and comfy sleep. Breakfast was excellent, good produce, lots of choice and piping hot full English.
We are planning our next trip as we speak and we can't wait to return.
So well done Stanley House for living up to our high expectations and for doing what it says on the tin.

We visited Stanley House and ate at The Grill on The Hill on Sunday for a friends special birthday. It was wonderful! On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and met our party for champagne on arrival. The dining room was beautiful. The table looked gorgeous and a lot of attention to detail made it feel really special. The food was out of this world, perfect starters, the beef was to die for and the Yorkshire puddings amazing! I managed to find space for the sticky toffee pudding which was also delicious. We were then served coffee, chocolates and birthday cake. The staff could not do enough and made us all feel welcome and special. It really could not have been a better celebration. We will definitely be returning. Thank you to all at Stanley House for making the afternoon so wonderful.

Stanley House is an immaculately presented hotel with a beautiful spa facility. The rooms are extremely comfortable, spacious with lovely bathrooms. Our experience of the hotel was though mixed. Our arrival was poor with the reception desk empty and no real feel of welcome when somebody did arrive. In addition communication in relation to the use of the spa facilities and when these were available for guests on a complimentary basis was very poor. This was something of a frustration and left us confused, especially given that the information we needed was somewhat buried on the website and had not been indicated with the secret escape offer.

It is important to note that the spa facilities are not free for guests Friday – Sunday, but are free Monday – Thursday. In addition you need to book in to use the facilities and you are given a 2 hour slot – so if you are one of those people that likes to be flexible as to what you are doing on a given day (say because of the weather) or pop in for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening before dinner (without fixed time slots), then this may not be the spa for you. Having said that facilities really are top class (especially the different steam rooms and saunas) and the fact that the number of people using the facilities is controlled means you are always guaranteed a fairly private and relaxing experience. For us we were alone for an hour and it was absolutely tranquil, beautiful and very restoring. The treatments offered were in our experience top class and we felt revitalised after our two days in the hotel. The massage I had was one of the best ever. The pool is not one for swimming, it really is a small thermal pool for relaxing in – so if you want to swim again this may not be the spa for you. The sauna and thermal pool do though have spectacular picture windows. As you can see it is swings and roundabouts like most things in life.

We eat in Mr Fred’s lounge bar both evenings. The food was good and tasty but of the simple variety. The food was not memorable but it certainly was cooked to a high standard and consistent. There is a more upmarket restaurant, but this was not included with our package. If you are into your food (like we are) it would probably be a good idea not to restrict yourself to the lounge bar for evening meals. One option the hotel could think about is, for those guests on the breakfast and dinner package, to offer a certain amount off the bill in the more upmarket restaurant – this would add some flexibility for guests. One aspect of Mr Fred’s that was odd was on our first night, half the seating was closed off and so all guests found themselves crammed into the one room with very little privacy or space between the tables. This is not so pleasant for your evening meal. We found breakfast to be a little disappointing (especially the quality of products on the buffet which we did not think were up to the standard that the hotel sets for itself). The cooked breakfasts were generally good, although even in the two days we were there the cooking standards varied (one morning the porridge had been overcooked into a hard gloop and the chef obviously thought this was fine to serve). Service at breakfast was also generally slow even though there was ample staff and sometimes simple requests (for another pot of tea) were forgotten.

We also had problems with our room (the bathroom flooding due to a blocked shower drain) so our room was off-limits just as we came back from the spa and wanted to change. Further, the bathroom products were not replenished automatically when our room was serviced – although we were showered with products when we phoned down to get some shower gel for the evening.

If you are driving a distance the hotel is in a wonderful position just 10 minutes off the M6 – this makes the location very attractive with no long country roads to drive to arrive to the hotel.

A sign of how a business views its customers is how it responds and we found that the hotel listened to our issues and where they felt we had a point agreed – this can be rare. The hotel could not have done more to make us feel welcome and cared for after we raised our frustrations and this was very much appreciated and changed our experience for the last day of our stay.

The conclusions we had of the hotel are that it is beautiful and the restoration of the old building absolutely stunning with a wonderful spa (even with the restricted access). However, for a two night stay we saw too many of the little things not run quite right. This could be an absolutely top class destination and I suspect it will be when they iron out some of the smaller issues they have. The fundamentals are certainly in place though and it is clear that the hotel is really striving for excellence and is not prepared to accept less.

One of the best hotel rooms I have ever stayed in, very well presented with smilie, friendly staff, great location with superb views, only downside was the walk across the courtyard to the accommodation block, brollies were supplied, but a covered walk way would make it perfect!
