We just visited Frankenmuth and the Bavarian Inn in hopes of getting a taste of some authentic German food. The restaurant is absolutely lovely with it's Grimm Fairy Tale frescoes, costumed staff, and other Bavarian inspired decor. We ordered the Heidelberg and the Bavaria lunch plates, which were samplings of their meats. Having lived extensively in Bavaria, I was disappointed that their representation of these dishes was a bit off. The rouladen and the sauerbraten were both tough and there flavor seemed watered down.
Just a few suggestions...serve Kaiser or other rolls, brown bread, instead of that white bread. And please, serve stollen in the crusty loaf slices that are truly typical German.
Don't get me wrong, the Bavarian Inn wasn't a bad experience but, it certainly wasn't a typical German experience. Maybe it was an "off" day. I left disappointed because we had driven so far to get an authentic meal.
