Owner description: The Flint Institute of Arts is the second largest art museum in the State of Michigan and one of the largest museum art schools in the nation. Each year, more than 160,000 people visit the FIA’s galleries and participate in FIA programs and services. For more than 85 years, the FIA has been responsible for acquiring, protecting and presenting a collection of art and artifacts spanning continents and 5,000 years. The world renowned collection, which now exceeds 8,000 objects, is significant for its depth of important European and American paintings and sculptures, 15th century to the present, and its extensive holdings of decorative and applied arts including important ethnographic study collections dating back five millennia. The FIA promotes the power of the visual arts by providing lifelong learning opportunities to engage and educate a diverse regional audience. The FIA is committed to making art available, approachable, and accessible to all through a broad range of interpretive programs that allow multiple ways of accessing information on the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions through guided tours; lectures and community dialogues; art classes, workshops and studio demonstrations; gallery, studio, and outreach programs for PreK-12, Head Start and homeschool students; films and videos; print, audio, and multimedia resources. Films and videos shown in the FIA’s 330 seat Theater are selected to appeal to three distinct audiences: adults, college students, and senior citizens. Printed exhibition and collection catalogues, gallery guides, school brochures, audio guide entries, and online resources are produced to enhance educational opportunities for the broadest possible audience. The FIA Art School runs at full capacity from 9:00a to 9:00p with an annual enrollment of more than 1,700 students. The Art School remains dedicated to the educational enlightenment of the public through formal studio instruction in drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, glass mosaic, fiber, and metal sculpture. The school also provides summer camps for youth, free family activities, and a pre-college portfolio development program for gifted high school students.

“One of Flint's great institutions!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

My husband and I visited last weekend to catch the American Painting exhibit, which was excellent. The selection of paintings was breathtaking, and the museum itself relaxing and comfortable as always. The following Wednesday, we attended a film on Burchfield...one of his paintings was in the exhibit and one also in the permanent collection. We are always amazed and thrilled that we have such a beautiful museum in our city. We are, indeed, very fortunate.

“This is a nice museum with many rotating exhibits”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

It seems like there is always something new to see here. Our family goes every few months to check out the special exhibits. The rest of the museum is also quite nice and they have a theatre which is usually running films on Saturdays. This is a grea way to spend a few hours. Their website lists special events, classes, etc. so you can see if there is something there for younger kids as well. They often have something going on the weekends for kids.

“The Jewel of Flint”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

The FIA is an art and culture experience not to be missed during any (!) trip to the area and within the State of Michigan. The artwork is world class, as is the long list of things to learn and do within the FIA (and, for that matter, within the entire environs of the Fint Cultural Center). Neat, clean and well presented and staffed by caring and knowledgable staff, everything is worth the time, including the gift shop and the coffee botique. In addition, the film series is not to be missed. Difficult to find works of cinimatic art from around the world is presented on a wide screen with state of the art equipment in a most comfortable theater. And, don't ever miss one of the outstanding lectures given on a wide variety of subjects throughout the year. Note: We have visited world class museums in New York, Rome, Paris, Florence, Chicago, Detroit, London and Amsterdam. While certainly smaller, the FIA is equally amazing and on a par, believe it or not, with any and all of the above. Don't miss it!

A must see attraction in the Flint area. It is in an area known for its cultural attractions, such as Flint Symphony Orchestra, Longway Planetarium, and the Sloan Automobile Historic Museum. A must see in Flint.

“Wonderful world of art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

There were so many era pieces and paintings, it was amazing. There are extra room with special pieces, but we did not pay to see them. We were limited with funds, but even without that, it was worth the trip. There is a modern piece of a human face that is totally worth viewing. I was dumbfounded.
