“Slow Down and Enjoy”
Reviewed June 22, 2014

If you're in a hurry, choose somewhere else. However, if you want a fantastic meal made from the freshest local ingredients, you'll love this place. It's located in downtown Fennville - kind of in the middle of nowhere. Our party of four was seated immediately (about 5:30 PM on a Saturday). Server was right on top of things. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Brought delicious fresh-baked bread to our table while we looked over the menu. Not an extensive menu, but enough offerings to satisfy everyone. From pizza and burgers to wonderful entrees. They also offer gluten-free and vegetarian choices.

The scallops were absolutely amazing. Pan-seared to perfection and served with a sweet onion side dish. I also recommend the fried Brussels with bacon balsamic. Excellent! Others in our party had the pressed chicken. Another fine choice. Moist and tender with a saffron-yogurt sauce. Delicious!

There is a full bar and a few local draft beers available. The wine list is mostly Michigan wines but a reasonable selection. Service is excellent but be prepared to wait for your food. Because food is made from scratch, it takes longer to prepare.

By the time we left, there was quite a waiting list. The place is obviously very popular. I suggest you go early. They open at 5:00PM.

“Small Plates and a Smile”
Reviewed June 19, 2014

We totally enjoyed our visit to this establishment. Kelly is by far, one of the best servers we have encountered. She was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Her recommendations were spot-on. The potato/leek soup was excellent. The pierogies were huge by my Polish heritage standards. Very Tasty! Very Flavorful. The salads were very good. A nice surprise was the 12-string guitar player. I would highly recommend this establishment.

“Better Service Please!”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

Excellent food-kind of expensive-salads getting smaller-service very slow and many people running around not knowing what to do. Could not find anyone to seat us-looked like they were training someone to make expresso. The girls never looked up to noticed a line gathering-sure hope they are ready for the summer tourists. We had 2 salads and a small pizza. Service slow-

“Allegan County's Best Kept Secret”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

Located just five miles away from the beaches and sand dunes of Saugatuck & Douglas in MI is Allegan County's best kept secret: a small and unassuming restaurant in the middle of Fennville called "SALT OF THE EARTH." The restaurant was suggested to me by a local resident of Saugatuck who suffers from gluten-related issues as I do. I have been to several restaurants around the touristy areas of Allegan County, but nothing compares to the delicious gluten-free and Paleo-friendly menu concoctions they have at this restaurant. True to their name, the restaurant prides itself in serving only locally sourced and sustained meats, veggies and ingredients. I refuse to make any suggestions as to what to order since I have been back there several times and have yet to figure out which one is my favorite dish. Every menu item that I've sampled and ordered is simply superb. If you are headed to Saugatuck & Douglas for a weekend get-away, this restaurant is not to be missed. If you want to experience the perfect date night at this restaurant, ask for CYNTHIA to be your server. :)

“We drive an hour for this food”
Reviewed May 29, 2014 via mobile

Have been going to this place for about a year now. It is far from home for us, but their fresh, homemade bread and wonderful food keep us driving. Have tried numerous items on the menu and have not been disappointed. I have had "iffy" drinks there but I now avoid their specialty drinks and am satisfied. Last year, service was terrible, but we kept getting the same waitress. She appears to have found different employment. Bread and Bar in Benton Harbor has tried to mimic their menu and has failed terribly. Avoid that restaurant under 10 miles from us and drive to Salt of the Earth if I want carmelized brussel sprouts or steak or pork belly. Uh...yum!
