We enjoyed a nice meal, hearty portions, fairly priced. Service was fine and attentive but those who are in a rush-rush might get annoyed...go when you have time to relax, chat and appreciate the food.

This will be some of the best local, fresh food you have ever had. Creative menu that changes with the season.

The atmosphere of SotE is romantic and laid back. We had fresh tulips in a vase on our table despite the winter season. Their cocktails are amazing and my husband said his steak was the best he has ever had. A little pricey but the food and drinks were worth it and we decided it was one night we could splurge.

We had dinner at Salt of the Earth while staying at a nearby Bed & Breakfast. The restaurant was highly recommended by our innkeeper. We are so glad we made the 20 minute drive to this very nice restaurant. The tastle and quality of the food was delicious. We recommend the pierogies - very good. My husband had scallops and I had chicken. Both excellent. However, you can't leave until you have tried the s'mores dessert. Yum! The restaurant was very clean and the waitress was very kind.

Salt of the Earth Restaurant is in Fennville, MI, about a 15-min drive from Saugatuck. They try to source their ingredients provided within a 50-mi radius to ensure their freshness and support the community. They don't take reservations, so we showed up at 5pm opening time. The place filled up pretty quickly.

Complimentary bread was provided, baked in their own ovens. We split a mixed green salad with shaved Parmesan cheese and their home made croutons.

For our main courses, Cathie had pork meat loaf (five slices) arrayed on mashed potatoes. I had the porchetta, i.e., roast pig. They take deboned half pig, spice it up, and roll it tightly. Then it is slow roasted to perfection. Depending on the cut you get, it could contain pork belly (uncured and unsmoked bacon), loin, or shoulder. My cut was a 3/4-in thick slice that included pork belly and loin. It was absolutely marvelous. The fat in the pork belly had cooked down to a luscious paste that went well spread on a bit of their crusty bread, and the meats within were excellent. This was served on a bed of polenta. We split an order of roasted Brussel Sprouts for our vegetable. We had a bottle of Bowers Harbor (Old Mission Peninsula) Pinot Grigio with our salad and meal.

For dessert we shared a double scoop of Palazzolo's Artisan vanilla gelato, and had a glass each of M. Lawrence "Sex" Brut Rose (Leelanau Peninsula) sparkling wine.

With tax and tip, the meal cost $105. Everything about our experience was enjoyable. The food was well made and presented, and the staff is friendly and competent.
