Yes, the property is lovely and must be a popular wedding spot, but do not expect 4 star amenties. We were greeted with dozens of dead or dying fies on the sills of our room. Since I had made the reservations three months in advance, our arrival was not a surprise. I noticed visible dust on light fixtures and other surfaces. We could find no hangers in the closet. I had to beg for hangers at the front desk. The desk clerk solved the problem by taking hangers from the restaurant's closet. The property in listed as a Michigan historical site and it may be that imporvements can not be made. If so, that might explain the bathroom. You should be aware that our bathroom was straight out of the late 1920s. The tub is smaller than tubs of today and there is no surface area on the old, pedastle sink. No shelving either! We had to use the top of the toilet tank for storage.

The restaurant has a nice, warm setting, but its menu dates to the 1970s; upscale 1970s! The wine list is disappointing at best. Fortunately, the chef had a couple of contemporary of specials that showcased his talents. Breakfast was OK. We were served juice, coffee and a muffin prior to the entree. There was no choice of muffin and the muffin was loaded with nuts. Nuts are an issue for me. We did have a choice of entrees and I chose a quiche. Wrong choice! The quiche was cool, not even lukewarm and the crust was soggy! My husband chose the two eggs with bacon, which was the better choice. One coffee refill and we were ushered out. We knew that a large wedding receptions was scheduled for later that day. It may that the staff had a short turnaround time.

We apologize for the issues mentioned by a previous guest as we obviously overlooked important details in the Brighton bedroom on that respective day. Rooms are inspected daily as well as walkthroughs before 3pm guest check-ins.

In regard to our restaurant, the building is an 80 yr old historic English Tudor country house, steeped in tradition. In keeping with the history of the home, the core menu items are prepared using classical French cooking techniques Our house specialty is the Chateaubriand, carved tableside which was created in 1820 by Chef Montmireil. Another very popular item on our menu is Beef Wellington which dates back to 1815 when the Duke of Wellington served it at the banquet celebrating the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. We also serve a classic Caesar salad prepared tableside which was created at Cardini’s restaurant in the 1920’s. In addition to our 15 item core menu, our executive chef offers 5 or 6 daily and weekly Chef’s specials.

Regarding our wine list, we have a 300 item list which has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 13 consecutive years. We continue to strive for excellence in product, service and hospitality, realizing there is always room for improvement; we appreciate your feedback.

We stayed here with another couple and stayed in the Cambridge and Cotswold in the Honeysuckle Cottage. This was great as we had lots of space to hang out outside of our rooms. The main house doesn't appear to have alot of living area outside of bedrooms and dining areas. I believe next time I'd switch the Cambridge room for the Stratford as there was not alot of room to put bathroom toiletries. Otherwise we loved the cottage and our rooms. Also both couples tried to take baths in our seperate rooms at the same time and my hubby and I had to give up as our friends were taking all hot water!

The grounds were beautiful and a pleasure to walk around. Just bring mostiquo spray in the evening during the spring/summer.

We did have dinner on site, the lobster bisque is to die for and everything else was very good too. We went the first weekend in May and the dining room was very crowded and loud. There were lots of large parties including prom goers. The piano player was nice but just caused large groups to talk louder. I'd request a corner table if you can. It was also quite warm in there. At around $100 a couple it was not as intimate as one would expect.

Breakfast was a nicer experience in a smaller room overlooking the backyard/river. All the wait staff was very nice and friendly at both meals. I don't recall what my friend ordered but do remember her husband and I ordered pancakes and remember him saying it appeared she got double the amount of food we did.

I did write a very nice letter addressing some concerns we had regarding our dinner experience and never heard anything. Because of the location and general good time we had, we probably will return at a future date.

Just to be spontaneous, I booked a room and made dinner reservations to surprise my husband. We were not disappointed. I requested a table by the fireplace, which I got. It was so romantic sitting by the fire, as we were drinking a very good glass of wine and listening to someone play the piano. The food was absolutely wonderful, as was the waitstaff. First class all the way. Our room was beautiful (The Avon room), and very clean and comfortable. In the morning we received a basket of fresh, hot coffee at our door. Also included was a wonderful breakfast, which was served in a beautiful, window filled room. This room also had a roaring fire going, as well as very nice music playing. Just like the night before, the service was friendly and very accomodating. If you're looking for something different to do with your loved one, you can't go wrong with this beautiful, romantic Inn.

The English Inn is more than an excellent restaurant and less than a hotel. Housed in a late-1920's country estate which was built by Oldsmobile's president and later became the residence of the Bishop of the Lansing Archdiocese, it now operates as an award-winning upscale restaurant which has seven guest rooms on the second floor. The inn bills itself as a bed and breakfast establishment.

The entire property has been carefully and extensively renovated, and the guest rooms are tastefully furnished with high-quality period furniture. We were there for our anniversary on a promotional package which included two fillet mignon dinners , a night's lodging and breakfast for $125! The food was, as always, excellent. We were upgraded from the "basic" room to a gigantic master bedroom with a huge bathroom containing a Jacuzzi. The room was immaculately clean and impressively opulent.

The small staff was wonderful. It snowed overnight, and when we departed at 9:00, we found the sidewalk freshly shoveled and the area around our car shoveled as well! The "continental " breakfast consisted of coffee, a large muffin, a large cup of fresh fruits and a large and delicious slice of warm quiche!

We've long been fans of this establishment, but had not stayed there until last night. it was the perfect way to spend our 42nd anniversary, and what a value the package was!
