This particular hotel is attached to the newly reopened Splash Universe Water Park.
When we arrived around 4pm, (which was check in time) they did not have our room ready. They told us to come back in a half hour to see if a room would be available. We came back an hour later and they still did not have our room ready so they upgraded our room to one that was immediately available. In our room, there were no wash cloths, the refrigerator did not work until maintenance came to fix it, no channel guides for the TV's, no video games for the kids to play and the wireless internet was slower than snails.
The waterpark was very busy (as to be expected) and I could not even find a place to sit down. While the waterpark was not stifling hot and the air was well circulated, the chlorine smell was overpowering. After standing there for 40 minutes or so, I could no longer keep my eyes open due to the strong chemicals in the air.
My husband and son visited the arcade and didn't even bother playing any games due to the fact that at least half of the games were not in working condition.
The hotel has a sort of "curfew" and asks that all patrons be in their rooms by 11 pm. Not that it matters - the walls are paper thin and laying in bed I could hear people on both sides of us and under us. Needless to say no one slept good.
When we booked our stay, we were informed a continental breakfast would be included. The next morning at breakfast we were informed they no longer provide a continental breakfast. While my son's $4.00 breakfast was free with the purchase of an adult meal, I paid $7.49 for a mediocre waffle, $3.49 for 2 strips of undercooked bacon and $1.99 for a small cup of juice - plus a tip for our rude waitress.
Our advice to anyone wanting to stay here - don't. The waterpark for a day pass is your best bet. If you want an overnight stay, go to Greatwolf Lodge or other waterpark and have a blast. You will save money and a great time is guaranteed.

Room Tip: Book weeks in advance.

Before the tornado damage you received 6 waterpark passes with the King Family Fun Suite. For $300 a night, I at least expect 6 waterpark passes. AFTER ALL, there are 4 bunk beds and a king for mom and dad. They now offer that you can purchase up to 4 additiional bands for $14.95 each. We recently went to Frankenmuth and stayed at Zehnders waterpark, at least there we did not have to purchase extra bands for our family AND it is much bigger, justa s clean and MUCH quieter in the early morning hours. Not to mention that there is more to do in Frankenmuth, SO needless to say this new 4 passes per room has REALLY made me mad! This room sleeps eight, I am paying for a large room, I EXPECT 8 passes. I don't think we will return to Splash Universe, since this waterpark pass thing, the value is not there. Our room in Frankenmuth was cheaper and every it as nice, we chose the breakfast and Zehnders chicken dinner package and we did not have purchase extra bands for our family! Sorry, Splash Universe, you have lost a repeat customer and I will no longer reccomend this waterpark to family and friends.

Overall, the hotel and waterpark are neat and clean. However, the hotel is VERY noisy - no sound-proofing in this place! Up until early morning hours and have young child that could not sleep. The beds are old - used mattress discounters? They are also lined with plastic covers which are uncomfortable and noisy to sleep on. I would not stay overnight again, but would come to enjoy the waterpark for a 1/2 day (which is about all you need before you tire of it).

I am going to give the Holiday Inn Express and attached waterpark a little slack because this was the opening weekend after the Dundee tornado hit last year. However, this is a fun one night getaway and not a destination waterpark like Great Wolf Lodge or Kalaharai Resort.

The pros:
Our room was clean and the hotel provides an included continential breakfast with your stay. Which was more than just donuts and cold cereal. It included eggs, sausage, cinnamon rolls, and more. We did have a problem with the lock on our door but, maintenance came and fixed it.

The cons:
The waterpark was extremely slippery. My husband fell stepping into the kiddie pool and we saw another man slip and crack his head open due to extremely slippery floors. The lifeguards were lost on how to handle this. We saw several other children fall due to the slippery floors and not because of unsafely running in the waterpark. My daughter fell into the lazy river while walking along the edge right next to a lifeguard. It was my husband who jumped in after her and not the lifeguard. They really did not seem well trained in a "what if situation."

We took our four children ages 8 and under for an evening get away here. My wife had made reservations online which ended up not including the water park passes- a little confusing. So we had to pay over $100 more for the rooms with the passes for the family. The room and passes cost about $270. Our room had 2 sets of bunkbeds and a queen bed in a suite. We had a microwave and mini-fridge.

As with other Holiday Inns, a buffet breakfast was included. Hot and cold items were available.

The waterpark was okay but much smaller than other parks we've been to in Sandusky, OH. There is a lazy river, 2 intertube slides, waterworks area, and toddler pool. We were able to use the park in the afternoon/evening of our first day as well as the second day. It did start getting busy on the weekend night. The few seats/table do go quickly so you need to get your stuff there early if you need one. There is an adult hot tub area but no warm water options for kids. We are always disappointed by this.

Next door to the Holiday Inn is the large Cabela's store. Our kids loved walking through the store to see the hundreds of posed animals including a large mountain and safari display. There are also some really cool aquariums that go from floor to ceiling.

We appreciated the proximity of this park but if our main goal was to visit a great waterpark, we'll probably drive the extra 1.5 hours to Sandusky.

A group of 9, including grandparents and 5 grandchildren between the ages of 4-10 along with 2 of their parents stayed here for 3 nights. We had two suites. One the Adventure Suite with a king bed and l set of bunk beds and kitchenette. The other was a Family Fun Suite which had a separate bedroom with king bed, 2 sets of bunks, a small living room and kitchenette. It was pretty expensive for the 2 rooms but so convenient and so much fun at the water park. We only had water park passes for one night but that actually gave us acess from noon the day of arrival all the way through the following day. Since we didn't have water passes for the next day, that allowed us time to spend th day at the Toledo Zoo, just 30 min. away. That night, we ordered pizza from the hotel restaurant and then swam in the hotel pool. It is next door to a very large Cabela's store which gave everyone an easy outing, especially the Grandpa of the group. There is a lot to do in the area, within 30 min. and we may meet here again since it seems to be a mid-way point for our family. Other than the expense, the only negative was the bathroom for so many people in a room. It would have been nice to have the sink accessible while others were using the shower.

The hotel was very nice. I really enjoy every Holiday Inn Express that I stay at. Originally we decided to book our kid's birthday parties there. We had 3 birthday kids, and the price of the party was actually VERY good. The kids got 4 hours of swim time and we were allowed 11 people with our birthday package and paid for 2 extra swimmer, all under $200!!! it was a great deal! The life guards were great and we had a table upstairs (in the community party room) for all our guest's stuff. However, the party staff was left to be desired. They had a bunch of teenagers working there, and needless to say, they acted like teenagers. Our table was ready for us (plates, cups, cake knife, etc) and to top things the knife they brought us was dirty!! i was so upset! BUT in all, the rest of the staff was great! I had a problem with not having enough aracde passes (staff miscounted) and that was quickly figured out, the staff did not even question my loyality (obviously it was legit). I will say, for anyone planning to stay for a visit/party/day trip get a table/seat ASAP!! they fill up QUICKLY and youre stuff will be left w/o a 'home'. Not to mention the rare occation of people throwing your towel on the floor. Our correction for this was putting our personal stuff (disney towel, shoes, etc) on the table/seats. otherwise, people throw the hotel towels on the ground! (rude, i know)! The Splash park was aged more for younger kids. Our teenager (13) was pretty board before the party. But our sons (8 & 10) had a BLAST the entire time. The concession stand is resonably priced. I suggest if you're staying overnight and buy a drink from them, to buy the souviere cup, as it has free refills your entire stay.
Our hotel experience was nice overall. the room was VERY comfy, and the kids had a GREAT time. When you get a hotel room you get a 2 day-pass for the water park!!
I suggest this hotel, but think younger kids would enjoy it more then teenagers.
