“Only place to stay in our book...”

We've been staying at the Pines Motor Lodge for nearly 30 years now and always have a great visit. The "new" owners, who have had the property for ten or so years now have done a wonderful job renovating the entire property and the retro gift shop is way too cool. The rooms go above and beyond what one would expect from a motor lodge. They all have a Hawaiian-type theme or feel to them with a lot of knotty pine accents, big extremely comfortable beds and earth-friendly products. The rooms are always clean and each room comes with two Adirondack chairs and a table outside your front door for your outdoor comfort. The property is small and there is no pool but they have a very rustic, earthy public area equipped with gas grill and picnic tables for social gathering or just relaxing in the heart of the motor court. While the lodge is close to everything it offers a welcoming quietness about it. The owners of the property go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. My buddy and I will continue to make this (or one of the other several properties these guys own in the area) our first choice for accommodations. As far as location, you can't beat it. Walking distance to downtown Douglas (eat at the Wild Dog if you walk that way!) and a two or three minute drive to downtown Saugatuck (could walk there but a little bit more of a hike).

Room Tip: We've stayed in several of their rooms over the years and each one was just fine. Inquire with t...

Excellence all-around! Super-clean, great value, convenient location. Coziest, most comfortable and clean bed in town! Will stay here again and again and again! Did I say clean?! Can't beat this place.

We stayed here recently on a very short trip to Douglas / Saugatuck, MI to celebrate our son's birthday. The owner, Steve, was very friendly and helpful. When we checked in, Steve shared information about the area and we quickly followed his recommendations: Oval Beach at sunset, dinner at Everyday People Cafe, hiking at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Beach. All these things, as well as a vintage train print from his gift shop, helped to make our trip so memorable. The rooms are very clean and decorated in a bright 50s vintage manner - not cluttered but streamlined and cheerful. The location of the motel is perfect: you can walk to Oval Beach (or drive there in under 3 minutes), walk to the quaint downtown and art galleries and restaurants. We will definitely return to the area and to The Pines.

The Lodge was an excellent value. The room was very clean and the beds were comfortable with warm comforters. My sister and I enjoyed the retro decor which reminded us of 'days gone by'. Thanks for a great place to stay in Douglas and onl.y 5 minutes from Saugatuck!

Room Tip: We were very pleased with the quietness of the room, even with people in the room next to ours.

Love staying here about once per year on a trip to Saugatuck / Douglas. Always find the rooms clean and inviting, and the owners are very friendly. It's in a great location - within walking distance to downtown Douglas or a short jog over to Saugatuck. The property is not marketed as a luxury motel, but it's very safe and very comfortable, and the beds are wonderful. 110% clean, and we enjoy sitting on the well lit and relaxing sunporch in the morning and having a coffee. Rooms always smell fresh and clean to me, without being overly scented or overpowering (I believe the duvet covers are washed with a nice fresh detergent after each guest leaves?).

This time, my one complaint was that I found my room was "too light" inside at night. The flood lights above the door let just too much light in - perhaps some draperies on the doors on the inside would help (they do have sliding blinds between the glass panes, but the light comes in the room, regardless). The new wood slat blinds on the windows are a nice touch and do a good job of blocking the light, but the door spot lights just seem to make the room not dark enough for a good night's sleep, IMHO.

Our only other suggestion is to have some breakfast and coffee available before 9am for the early birds. We get up early, and always have to venture out for morning coffee in Saugatuck (not a bad thing, but sometimes we'd like to just walk to the patio and grab a first cup at 8am). This is one issue that comes up each year for us early birds. Maybe have some on a timer or allow the guests access to make the first pot.

Room Tip: Love the king size beds. Have not had a bad room here.

This is a "standard" motel, updgraded , but leaving a lot to be desired especially for the price. Next to a busy road, no counter space in the bathroom, musty smell, and a "breakfast" of coffee and stale bagels that should make the management embarrassed.

Great clean place to stay and enjoy Douglas & Saugatuck. Very convenient location. The rooms were clean and modern. Enjoyed the adirondack chairs in front of each room and even had dinner (wine, cheese, crackers) there one night!!! Felt relaxed and recharged after only 2 days. Would stay with them again.
