“Great Stay, Great Hotel all together”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

Stayed at the Atheneum on Saturday night for a wedding, which itself was at the hotel as well. Overall, the hotel was great - the rooms were nice, the located was great and the venue for the wedding was phenomenal. It was very easy to get to Greektown and the casino - you don't have to do too much walking, especially in the Michigan weather!

Rooms are great - they are "suite style" with a living room type section and a lowered "bedroom." Two flat screen TVs - TVs were nice, but the remote controls were annoying because there was a huge lag between pressing a the button and the reaction from the TV.

Overall, a great stay and I can definitely see myself staying here again. The one downside was (not the Hotel's fault) - 18 Percent TAX on all Downtown Detroit Hotels.

That was pretty ridiculous.

I stayed there recently with my sisters, daughter and nieces. We all loved it. We loved our rooms and we especially loved the shuttle service. It took us anywhere we wanted to go within a 5 mile radius of the hotel. The staff was wonderful and the restaurants around the area were great. We also liked the Greek Town Casino. We will definately come back!

I stayed at the Atheneum for my 50th High School Reunion instead of in a motel closer to all of the reunion events. I valeted my rental car and felt much safer pulling up to the front door of the hotel instead of the darkness around a motel in some unknown area.
The doormen and the parking guys were super nice and double quick.
I loved the room and the bed was really comfortable.
One of the doormen sent me to the Ham Shop just around the corner for breakfast......it was very good and very reasonable. Try it!
I had dinner twice in the week that I was there at Pegasus the Greek restaurant out the back door of the hotel, down to the corner and walk down the block. It helps being Greek I enjoyed it more than most people.
All in all, should I return to Detroit, I would definitely make this hotel my base. It was terrific!

the deluxe room was hugeeee, i loved that it had a living room area away from the bed room. the bathroom was huge, and the beds were extremely comfy.

nice that there were 2 huge flat screens as well. lots of room. view .. could be better, but this was the last room and luckily we snagged it! fit all 8 of us comfortably :) hahaha

location was awesome too! only steps away from the downtown area.

I recently stayed a night at the Atheneum due to a wedding reception at the hotel. I had not heard many positive comments about the hotel but decided to book a night for convenience.
The room was clean, modern and up to date. Complete with a living area and a 3 stair step down into the bedroom area, the room was also unique. There was also a fabulous jacuzzi!
The bed was not the best but adequate. Again, definitely not as nice as the MGM Casino Hotel but worth a try!

Room Tip: Not a good room for the elderly or some one who needs to access the bathroom often at night due to t...

Let's face it, inner Detroit is not a tourist-friendly area. It's sad to drive around and see the residential and commercial areas that 50 or more years ago were "the" places to be, but are now largely abandoned or derelict.
There are still a few places worth spending some time at - the Renaissance centre-Joe Louis arena area near the waterfront, Greektown, and the area around the pro football and baseball stadiums. The Atheneum hotel is central to all of these and one of the few higher-end hotels in the area. Only about a 4 block walk to the stadiums, less than a block (almost all of it secure indoors, if you go through the Fishbones restaurant) to the Greektown casino and neighbouring restaurants, and a few blocks to the waterfront area (don't walk this after dark, daytime is ok). I recommend using the valet parking, it costs $20. extra per day, but is very worthwhile and efficient, they respect and are careful with the vehicles.
When we asked the front desk to arrange a cab for us to go to a restaurant one evening, they offered their free shuttle van instead (I had known this was available, but had forgotten about it). The driver quickly got us to our destination about two miles from the hotel and arranged with the maitre d' at the restaurant so we were picked up again when we were ready to return to the hotel. Even with a nice tip, still cheaper than a cab!
I don't understand the reviewers who criticized the rooms. We have stayed at this hotel twice, in fall 2010 and fall 2011, first room was a spacious one-bedroom suite with full living room, in a corner of the building, second time we were in a smaller room right by the elevator where the king bed was in a sunken area by the window, with full living room incl. fridge and large well equipped bathroom. Both rooms were VERY quiet, clean, nice decor, and ventilation/heating in working order. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

We booked a night at the Atheneum for a friend's wedding. Our first impression with the hotel was good. The valet service and bellhop were very attentive and quick to get us into the hotel and to our room. The room was spacious and clean. First impression was good. However, we immediately ran into trouble trying to get room service ordered. After being placed on hold several times for several minutes each time, my husband went to pick up food elsewhere. The batteries in both television remotes were dead and/or near dead. We also had lots of problems getting into our room with the key card...it would work after about a dozen tries. The room does not have a mini bar and there is no vending anywhere inside the hotel. I had to leave the hotel and go to a restaurant next door for a $4.00 bottle of water. Our room overlooked the adult entertainment club below and the noise from the street kept us up until 6am, when it finally quieted down. Lastly, although our room was fine, several friends in other rooms reported that their air conditioning units were not working properly.

On the plus side, the wedding reception hall and service were great and again, we enjoyed the spacious rooms. Will most likely not stay here again unless we have another wedding to go to.
