Most everyone who visits Mexican Town is attracted to the most popular restaurants that are grouped at the eastern end of the two-mile Vernor Highway restaurant/business district. A business recommendation took us further west on Vernor, almost to Central, and there it was "El Nacimiento" and it was well worth the trip.
Upon arrival, chips (still warm) and a variety of salsas and guac was presented, compliments of the house. The really best thing though, was that the ingredients were very fresh and the food plentiful. The soups were amazing, very large portions, and very flavorful. My favorite - the pork stew. A bowl was enough to feed 2-3 people.
The food tends to be a solid B+ all around. El Nacimiento has the LARGEST selection of taco fillings of all the restaurants in SW. You'll find each meat in at least one other Mexicantown restaurant, but never together under a single roof. So if you're challenging yourself (or a group of yous) to try a buffet of the trusted and the true, here's where you can get some fine tongue, brain, stomach, head, but also classics like carnitas (fried fatty pork tips), goat, steak, chorizo, and many more. Sometimes when you see a menu list with a mega list of meat varieties, you might be hesitant about its turn-over rate. El Nacimiento has that covered though, as the same ingredient list for the tacos more or less doubles for the burrito fillings, and, then also reappear a third time under the Torta section. That's to say, half the menu is built around these ingredients, so I actually trust all the meat of each variety to be fresh and delicious. Really delicious tacos.
In addition, they've got a private lot with multiple security cameras, for those of you who buckle at the knee once you drive beyond Xochis...
We'll be back for sure.
