“Beautifully restored hotel”
Reviewed March 25, 2010

Stayed here for 3 nights in January 2010 during the Auto Show at the nearby Cobo Arena. Beautiful rooms, close to PeopleMover, but had to remind housekeeping to service room on two days, even after I'd been out of the room for hours. Also, insanely expensive room service. Overall good experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Westin overnight to celebrate her birthday. We were both very pleased and very happy with our room. The room was very spacious and clean. The staff were very courteous and helpful. We had the Executive Suite and believe it or not, it was under $200 for the night. I know, I know, we stayed in February and not much going on at that time but even so, they could have made a few more bucks off of us if they wanted to. Over all, a very nice and clean hotel.

If you are a business traveler, you will enjoy the Westin. It is designed to let you have a meeting, work on your laptop, go to the fitness gym, get a cocktail and eat dinner. But, if you want to wander about the town, this is not a good location. There is no foot traffic. And, it's $25 per night to valet park.
The most significant disappointment is the beds were NOT heavenly. I felt like I was sleeping on a rock with a huge pile of feathers on top of me. Stay at the Hyatt if you want a heavenly bed. And, there is no couch. You have to watch TV in bed. But the TV is not in front of you. It is at the side of the bed so you have to twist your body and head. There was only one chair. Again, for solo business traveler.
The reason I ranked low for cleanliness is there were food trays in the hall from the time I checked in (NOON) until I complained about it at 4:00 pm. The pool area had no garbage can, so there was trash left behind. And, there were used towels on the floor and on the chaise seating.
A light bulb was out in the bathroom and the electrical socket was almost hanging out of the wall. You couldn't turn the heat up past 72. The space heater in the bathroom did not work. And, don't expect any fancy tolietries. For the price I paid for the room you would expect more.
Also, don't expect some happy bellman to greet you at the door or take your luggage to the room. It's self serve here. That was a bit surprising.
As far as the furnishings go, you could put on brown clothes and blend into the walls. Everything is so bland. The artwork is hardly on the walls -- it's brown glaze tiles, brown vases, brown furniture. Boring.
Here's the good. There is an empty mini fridge for you to use and two "free" bottles of water. The restaurant (I think it was called 25) had superior food and service.

The city of Detroit is fortunate to have such a world class hotel.
We went to celebrate an anniversary and were very pleased. The lobby was beautiful - there is even a doorman! (which is not common for Detroit) A historic building most beautifully renovated. The rooms are very spacious and upscale. A keycard is necessary to use the elevator -for security purposes- which is comforting. Although the theatres and stadiums are within blocks, walking after dark is certainly not recommended.
We ate at the Spa 1924 Grille which was absolutely fantastic - pricey, but worth it. Upscale dining with well presented, tasty meals.
The menu features produce and entrees from metro Detroit farms and markets.
To make a special event more special, this is the place to go.

This, by far, blows any other Detroit hotel out of the water. Impeccable service, amazing historic building, wonderful views. I originally booked my stay at a different hotel - which ended up being a HUGE disaster. The Westin was so gracious and even upgraded my room to try and make my stay in Detroit as pleasant as possible. I simply can't say enough about this place. I think the staff made all the difference. I also hear it's the only hotel in Detroit with a door man and 24hr valet service.

A+++

The only place I will ever stay when in Detroit.

My wife and I stayed at the Westin Book over Thanksgiving while in Detroit for the Packers-Lions game and found the hotel to be beautiful, well-located and with excellent amenities. We had a very nice room with a comfortable bed, plenty of stoage in both the closet and dresser and a large, well-appointed bathroom. The shower was quite powerful, even in water-saving mode.

We enjoyed drinks in the second floor lounge twice and had an excellent dinner at Michael Symon's Roast despite a slightly undercooked steak for my entree. We did not get a chance to take advantage of the pool or fitness facilities, though given the overall high quality of the hotel, I am confident they are fine.

Finally, the staff at the Book is very good and exceedingly friendly, from the maids, to the front desk staff to the staff in the coffeehouse.

If there is one small complaint about the hotel, the adjacent parking is separate from the hotel and is cash-only, which led to a little confusion when we were checking out.

Overall, we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Detroit. We do not think there is another hotel of the Book's caliber in downtown Detroit.

Maybe we expected too much after listening to all the hype, but we were really disappointed. The rooms were nice, but nothing special. The bathroom still had dirt from the construction. And the concierge was not very helpful at all in getting dinner reservations (our belllman was more helpful than her)
