“Gorgeously renovated hotel”

This is one of the nicest hotels in Detroit, with beautiful public areas and rooms. The room we stayed in was very large with a large bathroom as well. My only critique was the hotel only had the one restaurant to get breakfast on a Sunday and it ended up being about $45 for two for coffee and scrambled eggs. I would recommend that anyone staying at the hotel go someplace like the Hudson Café on Woodward for breakfast.

Finally a top notch hotel in downtown Detroit that's not attached to a casino. We spent Friday night downtown for a hockey game and dinner and the Westin definitely fit the bill. It's close to the Michigan people mover station - less than a block - and if the weather is decent it's walking distance to Campus Martius and Grand Circus park in the summer.

The valet service was great as were the front desk staff. We ended up in the Motor bar for drinks and appetizers before the game and dessert after. Everything was great. The bar was a little understaffed for a night with both hockey and auto show traffic but the staff that was there did a great job.

We had originally planned to have room service but passed - $16 plus tip and delivery charge for an omelette is a tad excessive. if you plan to spend a lot of time in your room you might want to ask for views of michigan ave - the other rooms have zero view - basically other hotel room windows.

Westin has done an excellent job renovating the hotel and the quality is far better than any of the other national chains downtown.

The staff and room at The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit were wonderful. Andrew Frank checked me in. He was very kind, courteous, and professional. Eric from the Valet Parking was also, very polite, courteous, and respectful. Our room was awesome, upgraded, and clean. The cleaning staff did an awesome job preparing our room. They were genuinely interested in our well being. I felt valued and cared for. Thank you to everyone at The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit for an enjoyable stay that exceeded my expectations.

My partner and I stayed at the Westin Book Cadillac for a weekend trip to Detroit to attend the International Auto Show. This hotel is a great choice if attending events at the Cobo Center, the Joe Louis Arena, Fox Theater, or Ford Field (all of these venues are just a 10 minute walk from the hotel). Easy to get anywhere downtown on foot or by the People Mover (which has a station just across the boulevard from the hotel.) The Book Cadillac is an architectural gem of Detroit in the historic Washington Blvd. section of Downtown. Detroit has so many grand buildings, it's nice to see this one saved and lots of money spent on restoring it to glory.

CHECK-IN
Arrival was easy (though it was a bitter cold winter night!). Valet parking is offered, but we chose to park in the adjacent garage (enter off of Michigan Ave - just past the hotel - $15 per night parking charge was added to hotel bill, unlimited in/out privileges) - garage seemed safe (it's the same one used by the valet service and by the owner residents of the Westin Residences.) Check in was friendly and efficient - we were in our room in less than 10 minutes of parking the car. Got upgraded to a premium room due to SPG Gold status - room was at end of hallway (per our request).

Room
Room was spacious, perfectly clean. Nicely decorated in typical, soothing color palette of Westin - it really helps to make you feel relaxed and revitalized. Since it was an end-of-hall room, had three large windows - lots of natural light, but the black out curtains allowed you to sleep whenever you wanted. Room was quiet, couldn't hear anything from outside, and minimal noise from other nearby rooms. Large closet with hangers provided, plenty of drawer space., and a nice comfortable work desk. Large bathroom with separate tub and shower (with Westin's rainfall shower and separate shower 'wand.) Heavenly bed was (as always) so inviting and divinely comfortable! Slept very well. Room featured a big, 47" HD TV and a nice high-end radio/alarm clock on the bed-sized night stand. Nice, laptop size safe inside the closest, mini-bar in the dresser, and coffeemaker supplied with Starbucks coffee and Tazo teas. Room was cleaned and serviced very well each night, all amenities were restocked as needed. Evening turndown service was requested and provided.

Public Areas
All areas of the hotel are well-maintained. Hotel is only 5 years old, and it is kept pristine - saw lots of staff cleaning the halls and lobbies. Nice sculpture, wall art, and flowers throughout the hotel. Special displays of Detroit Shinola products and bikes in the lobby were interesting. Enjoyed cocktails at the Motor Bar (main lobby area) - some unique and tasty offerings in an elegant and comfortable space. Also enjoyed the pool facility - very clean, well maintained, and comfortable - only wish they had a locker or changing room for the pool area. The Westin Workout fitness area land the 24 Spa looked well-appointed (I didn't get to use these on this trip).

Food/Beverage service
Cocktails and dessert at the Motor Bar were great, with nice friendly service. Breakfast at the Boulevard Room was tasty, with great service, but the prices were rather high ($50 for two of us). Had dinner at Roast one night - this is a top-notch dining experience. The space is lovely, the smell of roasted meats permeates the entire space, and the menu is fabulous. Everything is consistently amazing - one of the best meals I've had anywhere in the world!

Staff
Staff at the Westin Book Cadillac were excellent. They were all friendly, eager to please, and all were professionally attired and happy to help (save one operator on the Service Express phone line). Particular standouts were at the registration desk (both check-in and check-out) and at breakfast in the Boulevard Room.

Check-out
When it was time to leave, check out was just as quick and easy as check-in. Bill was accurate and we were on our way back home in less than 10 minutes.

Snafus:
Just a few missteps at this hotel. But these were minor and wouldn't give any pause to my returning to this hotel.
1) No bathrobe in the room. I called Service Express to request one - the Service Express operator seemed annoyed (perhaps she was having a bad day, as I was perfectly polite?), but she said one would be sent up - it never was; Oh well - I really would have appreciated having one of those fluffy robes for the cold nights/mornings!
2) One of the cordless phones in the room didn't work - I think the battery was dead, as it was charing all day, but it didn't work at all. Not a problem as there are two phones in the room. I let them know at check-out that the phone needed replaced - the gentleman at the desk was apologetic and promised to have it fixed for the next guest
3) The floor in the bathroom was soooo cold (yes, it was frigid outside), but the bathroom floor felt like standing on an ice cube, in spite of the small supplemental baseboard heater in there. If comfy slippers were ever appropriate in a hotel, it would be this one!
4) While the temperature control and HVAC system in the room worked fine, it didn't allow for a continuous operation of the fan - instead the fan would cycle on/off (rather loudly) each time the furnace kicked on - I prefer a continuous fan for white noise and a more restful sleep. This was mildly annoying, taking away from the perfect nights of "heavenly sleep"

Overall:
I would not hesitate to recommend the Westin for anyone looking for a high-end stay in downtown Detroit. Location is great, and the hotel has a very interesting history (check it out on Wikipedia). I certainly look forward to coming back to the Westin Book Cadillac when I return to Detroit!

Room Tip: Rooms facing Michigan Avenue will have the best views - Downtown Buildings and Ambassador Bridge to...

Thank you for your very detailed review – it is valuable to us as well as to your fellow travelers. As you mentioned, we are located conveniently to the Cobo Center, the sport stadiums, and cultural attractions. We are also delighted you appreciated our personalized service however; we would like to apologize for the other less than satisfactory experiences you encountered with Service Express. We look forward to your return back to The Westin Book Cadillac and hope you have a chance enjoy city this summer when so much is going on.

Downtown Detroit is not known for good hotels. The Marriott Renaissance Center is adequate, but not exactly great, but I've spent a number of nights there. So, it was a pleasure to discover the Book Cadillac. The room I had was notable for plenty of space, a halfway decent view (that's one thing about the Marriott Renaissance - great views above the 50th floor) and excellent service.
The room was very comfortable, with a good table to work from. Too many hotels had lousy working spaces, for reasons which escape me. The hotel is near a people mover stop which is useful if you're going to a sporting event or the Cobo Convention Center. Lots of bellmen/women available to help you unload the car or taxi. Speaking of taxis, several available at all times, including 6 am on a Sunday. Not every hotel downtown has a good cab line and when you're running to the airport, or a meeting, that's a plus.
Prices can be a bit higher than some of the other downtown spots, but you do get value for the investment. One of the best Westins i've stayed at, a pleasant surprise in a tough town.

Drove up to the front entrance - friendly valet helped us take our luggage and car taken quickly and efficiently. Clear signage to the front desk where the front desk clerk cheerfully checked us in. Front lobby is very stylish and clean - fresh flowers at make a difference.
Speedy elevator to the tenth floor. Hallways had a hushed tone - thick carpet and solid doors made everything feel solid and quiet. Room very spacious - bathrobe on bed thoughtfully laid out.
Bathroom very large - made the standard bathtub look very small - better to have included a large soaker tub to match the proportions of the room. All in all a very good hotel for this price, but nothing "wow" or memorable.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor with a room that faces into the street. Our room looked into the inner courty...

I stayed here for the first time and I must say this will always be one of my top hotels. I never had any problems with staff and the convenience is just lovely. I live downtown so its always nice to find a quick get away hotel away from the casino madness.
