“Wonderful Detroit Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Stay at the MGM Grand in Detroit and you're transported to Las Vegas. But you're also staying at the best Detroit Hotel by far, beautiful rooms, great and friendly staff, a real MoTown experience. Enthusiastically recommended for all ages.

We just celebrated our 22nd anniversary at the MGM Grand Detroit. This was our third trip to this in-town escape and I have to say we were a little disappointed. Our previous stays were outstanding. It’s clear the place is cutting corners on staff, which considering how expensive it is to stay (and play) is not what we expected. First of all, we pulled up and were greeted by an over worked valet who was doing his best to greet and direct incoming guests, all while keeping the entry drive accessible to those arriving and departing. This was at 3:30 in the afternoon - aka check-in time. There was no door person or other support staff. Not that I can’t open my own door, but that was odd considering the location. Then there was a line at the registration desk. Again, this could be acceptable at other places, but waiting for 15 minutes in a line 10 deep is excessive just about anywhere unless there is a major convention or conference going on at that location, which there wasn’t.

We stayed on the concierge level, which was conspicuously missing a concierge. Again, not a huge deal as we are in-town and know what’s what, but splurging for the extra and then being directed to call an extension seems off. However, the men who worked the lounge for the evening appetizers and morning’s breakfast were wonderful. I felt bad for them though as they were by themselves and had to attend to the needs of an entire floor’s worth of people. (one staff person for evening/morning)

Overall, the place looks a little grungy, and the main lobby, which has an elegant modern feel to it, was also always littered with coffee cups and water bottles. Housekeeping? Between that and our miserable experience at Wolfgang Puck’s Cuccina and Pizzeria (Please go read that review.) – we’ll be checking out the Motor City Hotel/Casino next time we decide to have an in-town night away. We don’t get to spend money on ourselves often (parents of three), and we when do, we need it to be as special as the price.

Room Tip: Skip the buffet craziness in the morning and stay on the concierge level - as long as you don't...

World class casino in Detroit. I enjoy being there every time I visit. My host gets me the type of room I like every time. The rooms are clean, comfortable and pleasant. The hotel is very quiet and I sleep very well. The wake up call is very prompt. The news papers at the door are an added attraction that I appreciate.

Great night away with strawberries and champagne in the room. Dinner in pizzeria was amazing. Staff promptly brought champagne to the room upon our arrival. Hotel was easy access from highway, with Valet parking included. Room was nice and quiet, no disturbance from hallway, like other hotels. Casino had a nice variety of restaurants. Pizzeria portions were very satisfying. Chicken piccata was soooo good. Mid week stay.

This place seems like it has all the bells and whistles but it doesn't really deliver anything but a fairly clean giant hotel. The lobby area is beautiful and smells amazing. They do a good job separating the hotel area from the casino. The elevators are always slow and crowded but that's to be expected in such a large property. They didn't tell us when we booked but as soon as we were done checking in the front desk agent handed us a piece of paper that said the pool and spa were closed. Thanks for the advance notice. The rooms are nice enough and comfortable. The bathrooms are beautiful -
no bathtub but the shower is huge and has two shower heads. The valet parking is for both hotel guests and casino guests and it takes forever. You have to pay for Internet which infuriates me. Nobody charges for Internet anymore -get with the program. You get two stars from me for that MGM because even the Holiday Inn has free Internet.

This is by far the best hotel I've stayed in. The rooms were huge and gorgeous. The beds were very comfortable and lots of pillows. Valet was great. The front desk staff was very friendly and meet all expectations. The bathroom was huge. Very spacious shower. In room dinning was great in the morning.

I had the worst experience at this casino, they are so cheap on thier comp system. My wife is 27 years old and they wouldnt let her in the restaurants to eat because she didnt have a state ID. To make things worse they wouldnt even comp our room for thier inconvenience. Definatly not Las Vegas.
