Its neat to learn about the great lakes, and the shipping history. The kids loved reading about all the ship wrecks, and playing in the old freighter pilot house.

On the edge of the River, this museum has some very good exhibits about shipping on the river and the Great Lakes. The wheel house from a steamer is always a favorite. A nice family Sunday outing.

Stumbled across this museum from a brochure and it turned out to be one of our favorites of the trip. It has free admission and great displays. Learned all about shipping on the Great Lakes, and even saw some large cargo ships sail by. Plenty about Belle Isle - one of the cooler urban islands I've ever seen - and a full on reproduction of one of the Henry Ford ships. Not to be missed for anyone interested in history.

Small niche museum dedicated to Great Lakes shipping & nautical history tucked away on Belle Isle- Unusual hours but was open on Sunday. I especially enjoyed the Bablo exhibit. Has a cool observation deck for watching passing freighter traffic on the Detroit river. Some parts are designed to resemble a ships interior. Elderly volunteer staffers add to the experience.

The exterior has an Edumnd Fitzgerald memorial and some cannons, anchors and a coast guard boat for the kids to play on.

Clean, small, well constructed and thoughtful little museum AND the price is right. You can't lose.
