Downtown looks very nice. If your new to the city I recommend taking the people mover around the city. We also got the luxury of seeing the new transformer set in the middle of town. Downtown is surrounded by ghetto which kinda sucks. Its cool to see the Detroit rive and Windsor.

We went right after they claimed bankrupt.

We recently visited Detroit, MI. We were there for a Detroit Tiger's game. The city is so historical! The stadium was very nice. The people working at DTW Tiger’s stadium are so kind and helpful. You will have to pay for parking, but (TIP) go online and pay for your parking ahead of time and you can save yourself $$$. There were many cool Pubs and Tiger’s shops on your walk around the stadium and Ford Field is directly across the street! Greek Town is right down the street. Do yourself a favor and go support the Detroit Tiger’s and the city of Detroit! (TIP) Go to the food court and get the nachos! 

From Greektown to Campuis Marchius, to Fox Theatre/Comerica Park to the Riverfront (Harbortown/Warehouse area) downtown Detroit is awesome. I would recommend to anyone.

downtown has so many fun things to do, from great food to a beautiful riverfront. Not CHicago, but an old city with tons of old charm. Extremely friendly people. Come and explore. I'm 54 and love the downtown. Would live there in a moment, if the taxes weren't so high.

There is a lot to see and do in this city. Plan your visit. Get guide books. Call the Chamber and also the Visitor's Center. Get this info in advance. Take guided tours, which is the best way to see any city.

If you have 5 hours of time in our wonderful City, I recommend taking in the following:

1. The Detroit Institute of Arts - Get a docent tour. They are normally free with the price of admission and well worth it. Even though I live in SE MI, I usually take a guided tour annually and just tell the docent to show me what they consider important holdings.

2. Hitsville USA - This is the Motown Museum and it really opens your eyes about the players in the industry and some of the greatest singers that changed the way we sing our music.

3. People Mover - Arrange your guided tour in advance. Stations are actually mosaics. Each has a different meaning. The docent will explain the significance of each stop and connect it to the actual stop.

4. Two Churches
Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament - It's actually the Archdiocese of Detroit. Great tour guides in this historic structure built in 1905. Adjacent is the Boston Edison District filled with gorgeous historic homes. When you call for your guided tour, ask about who you should contact for this fabulous neighborhood excursion.
St. Anne's Catholic Church in Mexican Town -- Then go to Mexican Village for some great food

5. See the Ambassador Bridge - which is in the Mexicantown area.

6. Guardian Building -- An Art Deco Building known as the Cathedral of Finance. Amazing art inside & out.

7. Monuments & Sculptures - Detroit is a virtual outdoor art garden with so many historical and beautiful pieces of art punctuated throughout the metro region. There is a book that details the outdoor art and I suggest buying it as it is such a handy reference.
Soldiers & Sailors Monument
Calders
Soldiers

8. Belle Isle - Call the Friends of Belle Isle to get a tour. Very worth it. Was called Hog Island. Lots of ties to Prohibition.

9. Pewabic Pottery - One of the most significant buildings that has produced art worldwide.

This is just the tip so to speak. There is so much to see & do. Our City gets a bad rap. It's so easy to criticize. Check it out before you say anything.

Decide how much time you have. Plan an hour @ each location. You will be delighted with the secrets our city holds.
