I travel to Downtown Detroit often.. love the city.. the people.. the restaurants.. the food.. the little bars.. some people that are not from MI might think its dangerous.. just be smart and aware of your surroundings at all times.

Start with a beer at the Town Pub, go across the street to Centaur's and try something stromger and have an appetizer.. Walk down a block to the Bucharest and mix and mingle. Grab a cab and run over to Santorini Estiario in Greek Town and have a bite to eat. That's enough for a good and full evening. But you can top it all off at the Greek Town Casino..

THERE IS NOTHING THERE. It is all newspaper talk and hipe with nothing there at all. if you want empty streets go there. At night there is no one there at all and basically the same in the day. If you want activity and action Royal Oak, Birmingham and Ferndale Mi or off to Ann Arbor. I have walked Woodward Avenue downtown over ten time and basically all empty stores and no one there.

Let's be honest Detroit downtown isn't NYC downtown but why should it be ? We already have NYC. Detroit has it's own style and culture. With its multiple nicknames Motown, Redcity, hockey town, Troit and even Murder town Detroit stands on its own. Yes, just like any other city if you end up in the wrong place at a wrong time, you will be in trouble.

Detroit Downtown isn't huge. But what it has is the remanence of the a sprawling city that was called "Paris of he west" during the automotive boom. A few historical buildings still alive and many dead and some half burnt down and abandoned too.

While you are there check out the African history museum, Detroit institute of arts, Greek town Fox theater, polish arts museum etc. Jump on to the people mover and take a ride. If you are into gambling check out the MGMand Motorcity casino. By the way the top floor of of Motorcity has a wonderful restaurant - awesome view and a very modern setting - "Iridescence". A bit pricey but great for a special date / evening.

Yes if the city would get it's act together this place could be so much better and build a reputation to be more safer. I have been to downtown many times, my advice - stay in the main areas and you will be 100% fine. Enjoy !

Few Pictures : Detroit through my eyes.
