“Great beer selection, good food and plenty of people watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

We opened and closed at this place for my friend's bachelor party night which was a success. There was plenty of draft beer to choose from so it was hard to resist some final absolution or spaten optimator to get the party started. The service wasn't the greatest even considering we took up half the bar with 12 people, so we opted to nominate people for runs to the bar for rounds which worked well. The food was mostly German which is ok but not my favorite, though it was good from what I remember. Jacoby's is a Detroit staple and I hope to see it around for many more years. Stop by for a drink and you won't be disappointed.

“Came highly recommended, but...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

Our driver in from the airport said that this was the old-school place to eat in the Detroit CBD.

I looked them up on the Internet, said OK, and looked forward to German food all day (while enduring boring meetings).

We walked in around 6:30 on a Tuesday night and the place was packed. No tables, heck, there was no place to even stand! I asked the bartender where the dining room was and was told that they did not have one; we could eat at the bar if we wanted to. Of course, there were no stools at the bar so we left.

Apparently this is just a small bar that serves some food on the side, but you'd never know it from their website. They seem to have an upstairs, but it was closed the night we were there.

Overall it was a big disappointment.

“Great food”

The place does not look like much from the outside but the food is great german fare. They have a full bar also. The place is small and it gets really busy especially if there is a game downtown. But the food is definitely worth a trip.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

We'd been looking forward to some great German food and were eager to use a Groupon here. Metzger's in Ann Arbor is our yardstick for quality German fare. There was a private party upstairs and evidently no one to help on the main floor. It took 10 minutes to have the dirty plates cleared from the people before us when we sat down. Service was very slow and poor throughout the meal. The food was okay but barely warm. The spaetzel was chewy and the gravy pretty tasteless. The sauerkraut tasted like the kind from a can, German potato salad was not memorable - we like it with bacon bits. The smoked pork chop and schnitzel were okay. It was good to leave and be done. We'll stick with Metzgers.

“Great Atmosphere - Great German Food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Had a friend recommend this restaurant to me. After a trip to the casino, my husband and I and our friends decided to give it a try. We got there around 8 p.m. and there were two tables with food orders and several people at the bar. It is rather small, but the tables are situated in such a way that it is not cramped. The restaurant/bar's interior is cozy with lots of wood--it looks like it's been there for a while, in a good way. The food? All four of us enjoyed our dinners. My husband's mother was German, and they featured several items that she cooked, including red cabbage, roulardin (sp?) and spaetzel. He absolutely loved them here. The rest of us had various types of schnitzel, and we also enjoyed them. The potato pancakes were good, and our friends really liked the sausage soup. Our dinners ran around $13 each. We also sampled some German beers, and they had a huge selection to choose from. Waitstaff was friendly and accommodating. Overall, a great place to enjoy a German beer and meal. Will be back!
