“Best of Eastern market..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

Can't go shopping at eastern market unless we have breakfast at Russell street deli. Love sitting at the long tables rubbing elbows with strangers while eating breakfast. I love the specials...but eggs and sausage is still one of my Fav's. Be ready to stand in line to get in. But the line goes fast.

“Disappointment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

My husband and I used to eat here regularly when we lived in the area and always had good experiences. Yesterday we were looking forward to a great lunch. My husband did enjoy his chicken noodle soup and corned beef sandwich. I ordered the avocado melt and received a sandwich full of brown and black slimy avocado slices. Very unappetizing.

“Terrific sandwiches & soups....great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

Located across the street from the Eastern Market, the largest produce market in the Detroit area. This breakfast and lunch room serves made-to-order sandwiches, soups, and salads. The black bean soup was like a chili; they have 3 kinds of clam chowder, and daily specials in soups and sandwiches. The New England clam chowder tasted fresh and with much less flour or starch filler than is usual for New England clam chowder. The service was extremely attentive, worthy of a much more expensive place; tables hold up to six so plan to sit next to strangers when the room is crowded. A bowl of bread pieces includes several kinds of bread, thick chunks of dark and light. The sandwiches are great—I ordered a liverwurst on pumpernickel, with the lettuce and tomato on the side, along with mayo. It arrived between two thick slices of dark pumpernickel, and with a large wedge of dill pickle. My friends had “Pastrami All the Way” which was a thick layer of pastrami between grilled slices of bread and plenty of melted cheese. Soup comes by the bowl or cup, but the ‘cup’ is actually a bowl, so unless you are really really hungry, the 'cup' will satisfy. I was just passing through Detroit and we were too late for breakfast but I bet it's great. They also sell a line of homemade jams which you can buy to take home.

“Pay the extra money for the jam - it is so worth it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

I went here on a recommendation, and it was fabulous. It was totally packed on a Saturday afternoon at about 2pm. Warning: they seat you with other diners with very limited elbow room between you. If you're not comfortable getting friendly with strangers, you should not dine here. However, if you like good food, the discomfort is worth it - and kind of fun, too. I got breakfast and my husband ordered lunch, and both were excellent. I would say that his reuben was probably the better choice - and I don't even like them all that much! However, I got the toast with house-made jam, and that was the best part of my meal. I tried the strawberry rhubarb, and we bought a jar of blueberry lime to take home. Fantastic.

“Wide selection of deli sandwiches in the Eastern Market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

There are many dining options throughout the city of Detroit, a fact that many people find shocking. A lot of people will simply venture down to the city for a sporting event or concert, and limit themselves to either Hockeytown or Cheli's Chili. Not that there is anything wrong with either of those places, but with a little digging and venturing out, there are a lot of gems in the city of Detroit. Russell Street Deli is one of those gems.

There is a wide selection of classic deli sandwiches, including corned beef, pastrami, turkey reubens, etc. The sandwiches are very generous in portion size and use excellent ingredients. You will not find a sandwich stacked with cheap deli meat. They use fine corned beef, turkey and the like. All sandwiches are pretty good price-wise, since they are so large. Additionally, RSD offers many different types of soup, including New England, Manhattan and Rhode Island clam chowder. The New England clam chowder is delicious for a cold day. Plenty of flavor, but not overly heavy. I ordered the Turkey Reuben which was excellent. Nice sweet Russian dressing, cole slaw, and excellent kraut. My co-workers ordered egg salad and a half pastrami, half corned been on an onion roll.

In addition, they offer for sale cookies, brownies and jam. The cookies are huge and worth giving a try.

For a non-chain lunch with character, stop by the Russell Street Deli next time you head to Detroit.
