June 22, 2012 Friday night, we saw the Detroit Symphony Orchestra here and it was fantastic, very memorable. The view was amazing combined with the perfect warm summer breeze, twinkling lights of the boats pulled up to the stage and great music. There is definitely a 'wow' factor here. We payed around $30 p/ticket online in advance and sadly the place was so empty they were selling 3 for 1 tickets a couple of days before the show. No regrets it was definitely worth the ticket price i just hpe the DSO comes back! It's getting a little better but I still wish they had more variety of artists I'd be here all the time. There's usually a rap, soul or jazz band scheduled so you really need to watch the website if you hope to catch a different genre cheneparkdetroit.com. Also being an outdoor amphitheater it only operates in the summer months but is really worth the effort to get down here. It's just east of downtown Detroit off Jefferson, less than a mile east of The Ren Cen (the tall glass towers on the riverfront). You sit under a beautifull open white 'flowing' canopy while it's still light out (you can see the white canopy from Jefferson). The stage is right on the sea wall of the Detroit river (which surprisingly at 6-7pm is a beautiful turquoise, no kidding) and it feels like YOU are right on the water. Not a single bad seat in the entire place. You face the stage, the water immediately behind the stage, boats/yachts on the water anchored facing the stage, freighters going by and the extremely close Ontario Canada skyline on the other side of the river. You really can't beat the view. I was a little concerned about safety and parking and was very relieved to find easy sinage and ample secure parking on site. Drinks were limited and pricy but they do sell basic sodas, small bottles of water and limited alchoholic beverages which you can take to your seat. I don't recall the food/snacks. I'm always cold but no sweater or jacket needed, perfect warm Michigan summer night. Whether you're in town on business or looking for a relaxing or romantic night out, you won't regret this one.
