“Great location and *wonderful* staff!”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

This was my first trip to Detroit - was very impressed with the hotel - especially the location and the staff. The room itself was nice - we were on the 10th floor with an awesome view of the city skyline. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The water pressure in the shower was the only issue (it was barely present!). We had the breakfast buffet one morning which was good... nothing spectacular, though. The location cannot be beat... literally a 5 minute walk to Ford Field, Comerica Park, Greektown, and the general downtown area. We did have a couple of incidents where we felt safety was a concern as we were out and about... but that was kind of what we expected and really has nothing to do with the hotel.

The crown jewel of staying here is the staff. Each person we encountered was extremely friendly (not only to us, but dealing with other people as well)... and I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of them for being so awesome.

We got "book it early" discount which made the stay perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that face the skyline!

I think my experience in Detroit itself and the mere one night I had there has clouded my review of the Garden Inn Hilton.
My friend and I arrived on Amtrak from Chicago and got a taxi from the Amtrak station. He charged us $15 without a meter, so it was kinda a dodgy start to our time there.
The area around the hotel is deserted and as you walk around the city streets it becomes clear that Downtown Detroit is a ghost town. We walked from the hotel to the Rosa Parks Transit Center to check it out as we would be departing from there on Megabus the next day. Within a block we were being accosted for money from a homeless dude. Not a good start!
We had tickets for the Tigers game and we walked easily from the hotel, that's why I chose the Hilton. Comerica is nice but once you walk away from the park everything becomes deserted again. Detroit really lives up to it's reputation. Sadly.
The room was nice, free wifi without the need of a password. Beds are firm and air-con was fully controllable.
Unfortunately I doubt I will ever be back..

Thanks for taking the time to submit a review of our hotel. We are glad you enjoyed the hotel. It is true some of the areas around the city are not the best, as in any big city, but there are some great places and things to see and do if you come back again. Our river walk is beautiful in the summer time, and the neighboring Fox Theatre is a magnificently restored historic gem.

My wife and I stayed one night here, specifically to attend a concert at the Detroit Opera House. The hotel staff was without exception polite, respectful and friendly. Our 8th floor room was quiet, clean, adequately sized and had a view of the RenCen and the people mover. We had a light dinner and drink in the hotel's Chrome Grill and the food was very good, as well as the service. Within two blocks are lots of bars and restaurants, many of which offer outdoor seating. The two short blocks walk to the Opera House was easy and we felt relatively safe, although there were a handful of homeless people along the way and one friendly beggar looking for a donation to his "beer foundation". If I needed to stay downtown Detroit in the area of Ford Field, Comerica Park, Greektown or any of several venues I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Garden Inn again.

Room Tip: Request an upper floor with a view.

Thank you for the kind words regarding our hotel. We are glad you had a wonderful stay in the city. I will be sure to share your comments with the team. I have not yet encountered the local gentlemen who is establishing the "beer foundation", but I may have to look him up and submit my request for a grant.

Thanks for the great story, and we hope to see you again soon!

We stayed here on a park and stay package.
First the upsides:
They let us check in half hour early.
The room was older, but nice and clean. The beds have a dial your comfort knob on them.
The guys to park the car are fast and very friendly. Even running to keep everybody on schedule.
The Chrome Room bar/restaurant had good pizza and the bar lady was very friendly. It was nice and quite in there so you could have conversation and they had 2 tv's with sports on.
We did not have the breakfast buffet, but it looked good.

Downsides:
The line was long to check in.
The bass booms of outside bands can be heard right thru the windows when it is bedtime. Even our boxfan we bring to block out noise did not help.It would not help to request a certain side of this hotel as the bars with that type of music are all around the perimeter of this hotel. This was indeed the worst part of our stay.

Room Tip: Maybe those loud bands do not play on weekdays, but if you want quite sleep, weekends here are noisy...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us. We're glad you enjoyed your overall stay and appreciate the feedback. We're sorry about the noise you encountered during your stay. We are working with the mayor's office and the police department to fix the situation. Our area has been and is currently going through another revitalization as the area becomes more popular. We hope you'll stay with us in the future.

This Hilton property is fantastic, coming from Canada as we did through tunnel, you cannot miss the hotel.
From the Valet parking attendants who work very hard, to the front desk, dining and room service people you can tell CUSTOMER SERVICE is most important.
Hotel is clean, very centrally located, safe and feels like home. I would stay again and would highly reccomend. Special thanks to Quinton at check in who gave us a pleasant welcome and a speedy check in.
We will be back. 100%. There are other great hotels in Detroit, but this property should not be overlooked. Thanks again to all staff.

Room Tip: I guess if you had a choice, rooms facing East would be quieter. We had no problems.

In Detroit working for the week. Business working at was very close so this was a main reason this hotel was chosen. I was told it was a rather noisy hotel by a work partner, but I did not find that true this visit despite the fact they were remodeling.
Bonus for visitors coming in this summer this hotel is undergoing a major renovation.
They have it very well contained and segregated. So I have no complaints. I was on the second floor and all rooms were occupied, yet I was never disturbed by anyone else. They had the fitness center and pool closed, but were offering free passes to the YMCA. It is valet parking as it is right in downtown and sometimes that is concerning in the mornings trying to get out with everyone else, but the cars are right in the front lot and the valets hustle. They are very nice and polite too! As were all the staff at this facility.
There several resturants nearby walking distance. Comerica, Ford and Hockeytown stadiums are all one block up. Sportswear stores in them are very nice but on limited hours (close at 330 & 4). I would have no problems choosing to stay here again. You should also note while the neighborhoods surrounding it are a bit blighted, I walked by myself (a girl) in the main core every after noon with out feeling intimidated or being approached. I am sure it is a little wild if there are games going on, but for my time it was clean, close, and convenient.

Thanks for staying with us, and taking the time to review! Glad we were able to relax while you were here. We did finish the pool and spa last week, and the carpeting is finishing up this week. We should be all done with the final touches by the end of June. See you again soon.

We often stay in Hiltons. As far as the hotel goes - it was a comfortable room - but there weren't any "views" to speak of... Basic garden variety hotel, pun intended, with decent room. Breakfast at hotel restaurant the next morning was better than most as beyond buffet it had cook-to-order service.

Most redeeming quality of this hotel is its closeness to Comerica Park, Ford Field, The Fillmore and other theatre venues. If you want someplace with more nightlife and things to do, stay at one of the downtown Casinos.

Room Tip: Stay on a high floor, there is a fair amount of street noise.
