Owner description: Considered to house one of the best art collections in the United States, the Institute showcases everything from mummies to modern art and African masks to Monets in its outstanding collection of over 65,000 works. Don't miss the General Motors Center for African American Art, a part of the DIA which showcases 400 pieces, in various media, by African American artists.

The Detroit area, Michigan, the entire Midwest, and, for that matter, the entire United States, is most fortunate to have access to this magnificent museum. We have been fortunate enough to visit art museums throughout the world and the DIA ranks at the top of that list. But don't just take my word for it. Read the rest of the reviews and then see the DIA for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

I have been to the Met, the Louvre, The Chicago Art Institute, and the National Gallery, and this is still my favorite art museum. The Diego Rivera murals are amazing, the collection is displayed in a very user friendly manner, the Detroit Film Theater is always a weekly pleasure, and the cafeteria is very good. Throw in Family Fridays and free classes for members, and you have our family's favorite Detroit destination.

Friday Night Live is a great way to introduce yourself to the DIA. They offer guided tours and amazing music offerings every Friday evening. This is not your grandmother's art museum; the major overhaul has made the museum much more accessible to the non-"art snob" while the extensive collection will please even the most knowledgeable art historian. If that's not enough, if you live in Macomb, Oakland or Wayne counties it's free to visit. Get over there!

The DIA is a treasure. We were lucky to catch a guided tour of Rivera Court during our most recent visit. I always notice new details and Rivera felt it represented the best of his murals. The museum also has some nice interactive exhibits including the Dinner which projects a movie including pieces from the DIA. The American collection is especially well displayed.

It just goes to show there was a day when money flowed throug Detroit like it would never end. This museum is the epitome of this. Gorgeous facility with neverending amounts of marble and art from the ages. They even have a Van Gogh. Worth a stop on a cool afternoon!
