Holiday Inn Express Detroit - Downtown
Ranked #17 of 33 Hotels in Detroit
Reviewed August 8, 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Downtown Detroit because it is conveniently located by the tunnel entrance to Windsor Ontario. We were concerned when we heard about it being right in downtown Detroit because the crime rate is high. But we were assured by two different people who live in outskirts of Detroit that it was in a "nice" area. There were many problems with this hotel and safety was one of them. First of all, upon check in at 3 PM, we stood in the tiny lobby in a line of four people for one hour. There was only one person working the desk and it seemed that everyone in front of us had problems with their reservation that required multiple phone calls. We returned late to the hotel after visits to Casino Windsor and MGM Grande Casino (that casino was filthy, by the way). When we pulled up in front of the Holiday Inn Express at 2 AM, directly next door is a blues club/bar where drunk people were spilling out on the sidewalk and hanging out at the entrance to the Holiday Inn. And if they had been cast in a movie, they would have been cast as "unsavory characters". Thank goodness that the valet came out to our car and escorted us in because if we had been alone, opening our trunk right there to get luggage out. . . well, I would not have done it. The room itself was ok. However, the other guests around us were very loud and had arguments until 4 AM. Whenever anyone came or went from a room the doors made a huge bang shut. In the morning, my husband decided to go downstairs to get coffee while I finished getting dressed. Approximately 2 minutes after he had left the room, the door opened with a key and a large black man walked right into our room as I stood there naked. I screamed and he left quickly. He had on a Holiday Inn blue shirt. I immediately phoned the front desk and told them what had just happened and my husband walked back in with his coffee. He took over from there. What the maintenance man told my husband was that there was a smoldering fire in one of the rooms. Our question is, if there is a fire, don't you evacuate people?? Why didn't he knock before entering our room? What we think is that he saw my husband leave and quickly entered the room to steal something. What did management do about this? They gave us a free night's stay in that hotel. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING. We would never go back there again. We have written to Holiday Inn headquarters about this.

We booked this hotel from hotwire.com and paid only $59.00 for one night. We were there to see a baseball game at Comerica Park, and it was a great location for this event. The room was quite large and clean with coffee, tea, microwave, and fridge. We came home a bit intoxicated and had a very comfortable sleep on the hotel bed.

Other than the next-door restaurant (Big City), there was not a lot in the general area of the hotel. However, the People-Mover is quite close by (one block) to take you to Greektown and other parts of downtown. Overall, a good value especially because of hotwire.

Stayed there because we needed to got to the Canadian Consulate in the GM Ren Cen. We booked on htwire and got this room for about 75$ + taxes. Check-in and check-out was fast, the staff were helpful. Valet parking was 18$. They also have a shuttle that drops you off at downtown locations. The room was clean but dated. Very functional, no frills. For what I'd paid for, it was reasonable value. The breakfast was pretty good too.
The only downsides to our stay were road noise in the hotel room and that the toilet seat would not stay up when used by men.

My wife and I joined a tour group that had booked this HIE. Our stay was for only one night.

The public areas of the hotel were clean and comfortable, as was our room accomodations. Pleasant service from all staff we encountered. Good location in downtown, just west of Woodward Avenue, and walking distance to Foxtown area and the stadiums. Lots of street traffic during the day, which enhances the location.

Big City Grill is the hotel restaurant and lounge, and they serve from a well put together pub food menu. The Grill features Karaoke at night, so it is loud and boisterous.

HIE is just around the corner from Layfayette, and American Coney Island, too. So anyone wishing to sample these Detroit treasures, are just a stroll away from a blissful experience.

Staff could not do enough. Valet Parking- $15/night- courteous and prompt. Always offered directions and advice. Front desk made certain to ask about our day, about our plans. The room was clean and fresh feeling and there was no external noise through our 3 nights stay. The van on request was available and we used it once to get to the River Walk. Next time we'll use it more. The People Mover was a short block away and we had no problems getting on. Breakfast was a full amount, not a bagel and banana. Coffee and tea in the lobby at all times. So pleasant....We'll return..
