Many seafood places have mostly shellfish entrees. Not Joe Muer's. There were plenty of choices for those who ate only fish. The food was delicately seasoned and perfectly cooked. A bit on the pricey side, but for where it is located, that was to be expected. Best of all, the portions were ample. So much so, I enjoyed taking a doggy bag back to my room for another meal.

This place with Ren Center offers wihite table cloth seafood dining.

Place can get crowded so be try to have reservation in advance.

Service form hostess to bus boys very good

Ample menu, we started with mussels in white wine / butter, sauce, if you like fresh oysters on the shell do not expect much.

Chowders were the way they are supposed to be, I missed the bread bowl (I know Detroit is not San Francisco).

Main courses were generous in portion and well balanced with sides.

Prices? I do not know, I was invited.

If you go there for discussing business, could be loud for carrying a detailed conversation.

View to the river was very nice, including the Canadian sight.

This old Detroit institution seafood restaurant has reopened on the riverfront in the RenCen. We used the valet parking option, for which you pull up next to the south/west side of the building after driving along the river and the back of the RenCen and the cost is $20, or $10 with validation. We booked a 6:30 reservation for a special birthday dinner and had a great first half of a meal. Our food was very good, but our service dropped off after our entrees were delivered. We were seated by the windows as we requested with our reservation and the view is great at sunset. You can sit and look at all of the people walking, cars and boats go by on the riverfront while the sun sets on Canada and the river. We started with a caprese salad, gazpacho soups and oysters (which were smaller than average). All great otherwise. I tried the halibut special. Others had the recommended monkfish and the raw platter. The kids had pasta with shrimp and the salmon. The entrees were all good, but the waiter never returned to ask us if we needed anything and we did. We wanted lemons and parmesan cheese. For dessert, we had ordered a special birthday cake, which you can do for an extra $80 (chocolate, carrot or coconut). It eventually came and we all sang. They then took it to cut slices and we waited for another … too long. The slices arrived and they were tiny; the staff had only used 1/3 of the cake, for an unknown reason. We took the other 2/3 of the cake home. In the end, we were there almost 3 hours, which was way too long as we waited for a half hour for the cake, then for the slices, then for our bill… you get the idea. Not what we expected or wanted when we were in a fine dining restaurant. We then waited for our valet car. A sad end to our long evening. It could have been an excellent night and for that level of bill, it should have been.

My husband and I have been to Joe Muir's Restaurant in Detroit many, many times, and it has been our favorite. Food, atmosphere and wait staff have always been superior to any other. We had friends visiting from out of state and talked up this restaurant and went there this past Sunday. I made the reservation way in advance and hoped for a table outside, and even though we didn't get one, we did have a nice table on the window. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and drink selection, but continued to serve the wrong food. He bought the wrong soup, we passed around our filets a number of times to try to determine what was medium and what was rare. Some had grilled onions and mushrooms, some didn't? I ordered the special salmon, they ran out and substituted grouper (I've had better in Florida!), carrot cake always good. The bathrooms were DIRTY, no paper or hand towels. I've seen cleaner bathrooms in McDonalds! Need I say more?

While attending the Detroit Jazz Festival and staying in the Detroit Marriott in the Renaissance center my wife and I chose to eat at Joe Muertos seafood restaurant. The atmosphere was wonderful on the waterfront of the Detroit river, the food was great and our waiter Brandon was excellent. If you're looking for a great dining experience visit Joe Muer's.
