“Excellent hotel in a weird complex”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

This is an excellent hotel situated in the very weird Renaissance Center, which almost requires a GPS to walk through. Neat once you get the hang of it but it will make you glad this circular style never really caught on...but I digress, this review is about the hotel.

The hotel staff and amenities are wonderful. Undergoing a major renovation the concierge lounge is not currently functioning and they are using portions of the restaurants as a make-do, which is fine. I will be staying here again numerous times this year.

If I had to list a con it is the all-glass exterior walls will literally freeze when it is very cold outside, and opening the drapes will drop the temperature in the room by 20 degrees very quickly. A somewhat fussy thermostat that appears to be from a European hotel wasn't much help.

In all, very clean, very quiet, and very well located in downtown Detroit.

Hello Bradley and thank you for the wonderful review. Our renovations, which you mention, will also be addressing the thermostat issues within the rooms - and thus improving management of temperature for our guests. We appreciate all of your feedback and are thrilled to hear that you'll be returning several times. See you soon.

Successful conference stay. Upgrades and improvements are under way. Really enjoy the fitness center. Conference rooms are more than adequate for what we need. Signage could be improved. If you're not on the right level, you can't get there from here.

Hello Jim and thank you very much for visiting and for taking the time to write. We appreciate the feedback. You are correct that our $30M renovations are now well underway and we're very excited about the new guest room designs. In addition, we wanted to let you know that we are currently working on new guest signage that will help direct our visitors to meeting room spaces, etc. in the Renaissance Center. We understand that way-finding can be an issue and for that we apologize. Once again we thank you for staying!

I expected so much more. I stayed one night in a high floor king bed room which was supposed to have a view, the majority of my view was the side of the hotel and the surrounding buildings there was a very small skit of a view of the river. For the price the room was below average, nothing special at all. It was clean and that was all.

Room Tip: be sure to ask fora room with an unobstructed view if they even have any

Hello and thank you not only for staying, but for taking the time to write your review. We are terribly sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your view. While some views focus more on the river and Canada to the south, we do like to think that each of our upper level views are spectacular in their own way, whether or the river, the city, etc. As for the guest room itself, we offer some great news which is that we are right now in process of an amazing $30M renovation of our guest rooms. We hope that you will in fact return after completion, and experience the new design. We're confident that you'll love it! Thank you once again and safe travels.

I stayed here for a conference I was attending. Check in was easy. Staff was extremely polite and helpful. I liked that the hotel was on the people mover. It was easy to get to Greektown for dinner and get to Cobo. I felt very safe. The room was fine, looked like it had been updated fairly recently. The view I had of the Detroit River and Canada was great. The bar was packed and service was very slow. Drinks were expensive and food was very average. I would stay here again because of the location and customer service but would definitely eat and drink elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor with a view of the river.

i stayed here during the auto show of detroit for bussiness, the hotel is HUGE! and the lobby bar and resturants are great (expensive) but great views of the lake and you can see canada on the other side.
the rooms where old and tired..... mind you that we paid $549 per night!!!
the only reason i will choose this hotel is location.

I checked in and no one-no-one at all told me that the floor above me would be undergoing construction. Yep, jackhammer. I come back to my room for a conference call and it is deafening. I called and they said it would continue until 5:30 or 6:00. Serriously-it isn't sold out-you couldn't put me somewhere that isn't under construction? Or how about some notification so I don't come back for a business call and then not be able to participate. I understand construction but you have to be considerate and let guests. Had you given me notice I could have made other arrangements for the call. I will NEVER be back here.

Room Tip: Ask if they are doing construction as they don't tell you and make sure it is not the floor abov...

We stayed here so we could walk to/from Joe Louis Arena - which was perfect. Just not a ton of other things to do within walking distance. Hotel itself was very nice, huge and clean. Customer Service was great when checking in. Would stay here again to watch the Red Wings.
