“They try”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Good location at a reasonable t=rate but it is not as good as your usual Marriots. Mixup in the reservation on their part and yet I am now left to pay a higher rate my last night here. The reservation agent wasnt qualified to do this job. The food is tasty in the restaurants but very slow to come out. The rooms are average. If you stay here as ==k for a riverfront room up high to take advantage of the nice views.

Room Tip: Choose higher and facing the river.

The best thing about this hotel is the great location next to Riverwalk boardwalk. It is a biz trip for me, so the next best thing is the room. Clean, quiet, great views of Windsor across the river. Fantastic restaurants within the hotel. I always look forward to coming to this hotel for business.

Stayed here for a conference. Nice typical Marriott. On the Detroit River so you could ask for a river view. Expect to pay about $50 for a cab ride from the airport. Food court on the lower floor-part of a mall-has some good fast food if you tire of hotel food (and prices).

Hotel is in an awesome location, close to everything downtown, can take the people mover to Tigers, Lions, Redwings, concerts etc. perfect for that. Beds were very comfortable however just one pillow choice, I know I'm kind of spoiled with many hotels now offering choices of hard and soft pillows. The hotel is huge with four towers and in my opinion could of been marked better with signs, did several unnecessary laps. Another huge gripe and this is for a lot of hotels, if I'm paying $200 a night to stay include the WIFI for free. Hotel staff was very professional and friendly, room service was also good and reasonably priced. Would stay again for the location alone.

This Marriott mattress was the best yet - incredibly comfortable. My only gripes would be that the towels could do with some fabric softener, the duvet/comforter could do with a cover (it felt a little unhygienic), the room itself could have done with some fresh air (it smelt rather musty) and a mini-bar.
Having said the negatives, the pluses more than made up for them...
We were presented with a plate of crackers, brie and potato chips on arrival, which we hadn't asked for, but made for a lovely gesture. And Detroit being Detroit, the staff were lovely, incredibly friendly and hospitable.....
Everyone from the security guard to the chamber maid went out of their way to make us feel welcome, and it never felt like they were hustling for a tip.
Top tip 1: Hang out in the hospitality suite on the 56 (?) th floor in the early evening for a drink, complimentary snack, a fantastic view of Canada and mingle with other guests whilst being charmed by the wait staff.
Top tip 2: Take advantage of the twice-daily free tour guide of the Renaissance Center offered. And do it on arrival - the place is huge and disorientating. With or without an orientation session - allow yourself an extra five minutes to try and find your way from your room to the lobby to the exit and vice versa.....
A Marriott is a Marriott but this one felt more unique than the others, rather like the city of Detroit itself.

This Hotel is listed as a 4 out of 5 start in Orbitz so I rate using such standard. I stayed in a junior suite which was very large with two separate rooms. The room was cheaper than other hotels in Detroit that other friends stayed at. Moreover, my room was a lot larger than theirs. The staff were very nice and helpful. The BAR food was good. Some negatives - 1. Because the hotel is in the Renaissance Center it is very in personal. 2. To get to your room it can be a pain some times due to the way the elevators are setup 3. Major conferences are held there (while I was there were two going on) which affects the services. 4. There was no mini-bar in my room which is very strange.

There were signs in the hotel stating that they are going to update the rooms in Winter of 2014.

If you are in downtown Detroit, the Marriott at the Renaissance Center is an obvious choice. The good points: the room is a good size, it was very clean and smelled fresh, everything worked, and the three lamps cast bright light. Bathroom is on the small side, but ok. No makeup mirror and minimal amount of complimentary toiletries. Negatives: this is an incredibly impersonal hotel. You come in at ground level ("the motor lobby") and take an elevator up to the 3rd floor reception. Once you have your card key, it is not clear where the elevators are in this bizarre round building. I got on the wrong set of elevators, felt silly but later discovered three others had done so also. Why? Because the signage in this building is inadequate. Office buildings make it clear which bank of elevators is for what floors. Not here. When you go down, to dinner or to a meeting room, it is unclear which way to turn and where to go. Maybe it makes no difference, as you are literally walking in a circle, but you feel lost. The hotel has a slightly dated feel. The building looks great in photos, but in real life, there is nothing at ground level and absolutely no one is walking outside, even on a beautiful spring day.

Room Tip: ask if you can have a room that faces the river and does NOT look into the office building just acro...
